Because of its location, Rasht has a very special environment.

The weather in Rasht is very different from the rest of Iran. Most of the country is dry and arid. However, Rasht is a humid subtropical place with lots of rain. People often call it the "City of Silver Rain." The air feels wet and warm most of the time. To the south, there is even a temperate rainforest. This makes the area look much greener than other parts of the country.

Rasht has a very long history that goes back to the 13th century. It was once a major center for the silk trade. Many workshops were built there to make silk thread. Because it sat between the mountains and the coast, it became a huge trade center. It connected Iran to Russia and Europe. This is why people called it the "Gate of Europe." In the past, many different governments had offices right there in the city.

Many important "firsts" happened in Rasht. It was the place where the first girls' school in Iran was built. The city also had the first national library and the first national hospital.

As the most populous city in northern Iran, it reached a population of 679,995 people in 2016. It also holds the title of the largest city on the Caspian Sea coast. Because of its historical role as a border city, it was once nicknamed "Dār al-Marz Rasht," or "Rasht on the Border."

The city's environment is shaped by its position between the mountains and the coast. This location creates a humid subtropical climate, which is quite different from the arid regions found in most of Iran. Rasht is famous for its high levels of precipitation and humidity, often exceeding 80%. These conditions earned it the nickname "The City of Silver Rain." To the south of the city, a temperate rainforest exists, adding to the lushness of the landscape. The city also experiences lower sunshine hours than many other places at similar latitudes.

There are several theories regarding the etymology, or the origin, of the name Rasht. One view suggests the name comes from the word "resh," meaning "very light rain." This connects directly to the local weather patterns. Another theory links the name to the verbs "risidan" or "reshtan," which mean "to spin." This version connects the name to the city's historical importance in silk thread production. A third interpretation suggests the name means "low, sunken place," perhaps describing an original market known as "rasht bazar."

Rasht has a long and complex history dating back to at least the 13th century. During the Safavid era, the city became a major hub for the silk trade with many textile workshops. In the 19th century, it functioned as a vital gateway between Iran, Russia, and Europe. This role as a trade center was so significant that it was known as the "Gate of Europe." During the Qajar period, the city's political importance was high enough that the Russian, British, Ottoman, and French governments all maintained consulates there.

The city has experienced many significant historical shifts and conflicts. In 1669, the city was plundered by the Cossack warlord Stenka Razin. An earthquake destroyed the city in 1714, and it was later occupied by Russians during the Russo-Persian War between 1722 and 1732. In the early 20th century, the city saw intense activity during the Russian and British military presence in Bandar-e Anzali. Between 1920 and 1921, a short-lived state called the Gilan Soviet Socialist Republic was established with Rasht as its capital. This republic was eventually defeated by the Iranian army under Reza Shah.

Rasht is notable for being the site of many Iranian "firsts" in various sectors. It hosted the first national library of Iran and the first national hospital, named Poursina Hospital. The city also saw the establishment of the first girls' school and the first fire station in the country. Even transportation saw milestones here, as the first bus in Iran arrived in Rasht via a Belgian merchant.

Additionally, the city implemented the first sewage system and the first 24/7 pharmacy in the nation.

In the modern era, Rasht remains a significant cultural and economic center. In 2015, UNESCO recognized the city as a creative gastronomy city under its creative cities network. This highlights the importance of food culture in the region. The city is also a destination for tourists visiting the Caspian Sea beaches or the mountain resort of Masouleh.
