For example, to prove a statement about God, one had to prove it for every essential attribute of God. This included attributes like goodness, greatness, eternity, and power. The Art was unique because it used letters and diagrams to represent these logical steps.
Scholars divide the development of the Art into two distinct stages. The first is the Quaternary Phase, which lasted from 1274 to 1290. During this phase, the system used 12 main figures and 16 divine principles, or "dignities." These principles were assigned letters from B through R. The second stage is the Ternary Phase, which began in 1290. In this phase, Llull revised the system to be more streamlined. He reduced the number of main figures to four. He also reduced the divine principles from 16 down to nine. These nine principles included goodness, greatness, eternity, power, wisdom, will, virtue, truth, and glory.
Another important part of Llull's thought was his doctrine of correlatives. This idea suggests that everything in existence has a threefold structure. This structure consists of an agent, a patient, and an act. For instance, the principle of goodness includes the one who does good, the one who receives good, and the act of doing good. Llull used specific Latin suffixes to express these different roles. This framework helped him explain how divine principles are distinct yet equivalent. It also allowed him to explore complex ideas like the nature of creation and primordial chaos.
As a missionary and educator, Llull traveled extensively throughout Europe and North Africa. 
Llull's legacy is vast and connects to many modern scientific fields. Some historians see his combinatorial methods as a precursor to modern computation theory. His logical structures also prefigured the development of social choice theory by 450 years.
