Thongduang became a famous general through many military campaigns. He helped King Taksin reunite Siam after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767. He led troops against the Burmese Konbaung dynasty. He also fought to control territories in Cambodia and the Lao kingdoms. In 1774, he helped free the Lan Na kingdom from Burmese rule. His brother, Bunma, also served as a successful general. Together, they expanded Siamese influence across much of Mainland Southeast Asia. By 1809, the Siamese mandala reached the Shan States in the north. It also stretched to the northern Malay Peninsula in the south. 
In 1782, Thongduang took the throne and changed the capital. He defeated the rebels who had deposed King Taksin. He crowned himself as the monarch on April 6, 1782. He chose to move the capital to the east bank of the Chao Phraya river. He named this new capital Rattanakosin. This name means "Keeping place of the Emerald Buddha." This city is what we know today as Bangkok. This move helped him start the kingdom with a clean slate.
During his reign, Rama I faced major wars to protect his borders. The most famous was the Burmese–Siamese War from 1785 to 1786. This is often called the Nine Armies War. It was the last major assault by the Burmese on Siam. He also managed complex foreign relations in Vietnam and Cambodia. He provided help to Nguyễn Ánh, who later became Emperor Gia Long of Vietnam. Rama I also took control of parts of Cambodia to ensure they stayed pro-Siamese. These actions helped secure the power of the new Chakri dynasty. 
Rama I is also known for starting a "Golden Age of Culture." This period followed the arts of the Late Ayutthaya Period. He worked to revive Siamese culture and state organization. He established a new, purified Buddhist sect. This sect helped tie the monarchy and Buddhism together. This helped create a strong sense of national identity. His reign was a time of rebuilding and growth for the people. 
History records many different names for this king. At birth, he was Thongduang. When he became king, he took the name Ramathibodi. Later, his descendants used the name Rama followed by a number. This makes him known as Rama I in Western books. In 1982, the Thai cabinet gave him the title Maharat, or "The Great." This honors his role in founding the modern nation. His legacy continues through the Chakri dynasty and the city of Bangkok.
