Ralph Bakshi is an influential American animator and filmmaker. He is best known for creating fantastical animated films that offer an alternative to mainstream animation. While many studios focus on children's stories, Bakshi established a career through independent and adult-oriented productions. Between 1972 and 1994, he directed nine feature films released in theaters. These movies often focused on urban dramas or fantasy worlds.

Bakshi's work has helped change how people view the possibilities of animation.

Bakshi's professional journey began at the bottom of the animation industry. He started his career at the Terrytoons television cartoon studio. His first role was as a cel polisher. In this job, he had to carefully remove dirt and dust from animation cels, which are clear sheets used for drawing. Through hard work, he was promoted to cel painter and then to animator. He even practiced his skills by experimenting with soundtracks and timing. By age 25, he was promoted to director, where he led the series Sad Cat.

His early life in New York City deeply influenced his artistic style. Born in Haifa, Mandatory Palestine, in 1938, he moved to Brooklyn as a young child. He grew up in a low-rent apartment and became fascinated by the urban milieu, or the social environment of the city. He loved the textures of the streets, such as faded paint, wooden crates, and cement. He even built his own toys from wood and nails. These gritty, real-world details would later appear in his drawings.

Bakshi also faced social challenges during his youth. In 1947, his family moved to the Foggy Bottom neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Because the area was segregated, Bakshi grew up primarily in a Black community. He attended a local Black school with his friends. However, a teacher reported his presence to the principal. Fearing racial tension, the police removed him from the classroom. This difficult experience led his family to move back to Brownsville, New York.

To pursue his passion, Bakshi attended the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan. He graduated in 1956 and won the school's award for cartooning. He later moved to Paramount Pictures in 1967 to head their animation division. There, he employed various artists, including comic book creators like Harvey Kurtzman and Wally Wood. He used these collaborations to push the boundaries of what animation could achieve. He often sought to include more complex themes in his work.

Bakshi's filmography includes several landmark achievements. His debut feature, Fritz the Cat, was released in 1972. Based on a comic strip by Robert Crumb, it was the first animated film to receive an X rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. It remains the most successful independent animated feature of all time. Other notable films include Wizards (1977), The Lord of the Rings (1978), and American Pop (1981). He also directed the fantasy film Fire and Ice in 1983.

Throughout his career, Bakshi has received significant recognition for his contributions to the arts. In 1988, he won an Annie Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Art of Animation. He also received the 1980 Golden Gryphon at the Giffoni Film Festival for The Lord of the Rings. In 2003, he was honored with the Maverick Tribute Award at the Cinequest Film Festival. These awards celebrate his role as an iconoclast, or someone who challenges established rules.

In his later years, Bakshi has expanded his creative reach beyond the screen. In 2003, he co-founded the Bakshi School of Animation with his son, Eddie, and Jess Gorell. This school allows him to pass on his technical knowledge to new artists. He has also focused much of his time on fine art and painting. His career connects the worlds of commercial animation, independent filmmaking, and fine art.
