Rajan's early life involved significant international movement due to his father's career. His father, R. Govindarajan, worked for the Indian Intelligence Bureau. This role meant the family lived in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Belgium. During his time in Sri Lanka, political turmoil caused Rajan to miss one year of school. Despite these travels, Rajan has always remained an Indian citizen. He has held an Indian passport throughout his entire life. He never applied for citizenship in any other country.

His academic path was marked by high achievement in several fields. He first studied electrical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He graduated in 1985 and received the Director's Gold Medal. Later, he earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He then moved to the United States to pursue a doctoral program. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he earned a PhD in 1991. His thesis, titled "Essays on Banking," explored the relationships between firms and their creditor banks.

In his doctoral research, Rajan challenged the prevailing economic views of the 1980s. At that time, many believed that deregulating markets would always increase efficiency. Rajan argued that this was not necessarily true. He examined how different types of credit affect businesses. He also looked at the conflicts of interest that occur when commercial banks enter investment banking. His work suggested that the way financial systems are structured matters deeply. This research helped build his reputation as a specialist in financial institutions.

Rajan held several high-level positions in international organizations. From 2003 to 2006, he served as the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). At age 40, he was the youngest person to hold this role. He was also the first person from an emerging-market nation to be appointed. At the IMF, he integrated financial sector analysis into economic models. He also led teams to help major economies manage their balance of payments. In 2015, he also became the Vice-Chairman of the Bank for International Settlements.

One of Rajan's most significant moments occurred in 2005. During a conference at Jackson Hole, he warned about growing risks in the financial system. He suggested that a financial crisis might be approaching. At the time, some experts, such as Lawrence Summers, disagreed with him. However, after the 2008 financial crisis happened, many saw his warnings as prescient. This event showed the importance of his research on economic stability. His insights were later featured in the documentary "Inside Job" in 2010.

Rajan has also been a vital leader for the economy of India. He served as the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 2013 to 2016. Before that, he was an economic adviser to the Indian government. In 2007, he chaired a committee that proposed financial reforms. He suggested that India should take "a hundred small steps" toward reform. His book, "Fault Lines," won the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year award in 2010. This book explained how income inequality and trade imbalances contributed to the global crisis.

His influence is recognized by many major institutions around the world. In 2003, he received the inaugural Fischer Black Prize for his contributions to finance theory. Time magazine named him one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World" in 2016. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also served as the president of the American Finance Association in 2011. Through his teaching and his writing, Rajan continues to shape how we understand the modern world economy.
