You might notice that the pupil looks black. This happens because light rays entering the hole are absorbed by the tissues inside the eye. Some light also bounces around inside and misses the narrow opening on its way out.

Your eye uses muscles to change the size of this hole. The iris is a contractile structure made mostly of smooth muscle. It has two groups of muscles that work together. One group is called the sphincter pupillae. When these muscles contract, they make the pupil smaller. This process is called miosis.

This way the eye works is called the pupillary light reflex. It helps your eye adjust to the world around you. In bright light, the pupil gets narrow to prevent light from causing blurry images. This helps you reach your expected acuity, which is how clear your vision is.

In the dark, the pupil gets much wider to let in more light. A human pupil can be as small as 2 mm in bright light. In the dark, it can grow larger than 8 mm in some people.

People have studied the eye for a very long time. A person named Gerard of Cremona coined the term "pupil." We know that pupil size changes as we grow up. At the peak age of 15, a dark-adapted pupil can be 4 mm to 9 mm. After a person reaches 25 years of age, the average pupil size starts to decrease. The pupils do not always stay perfectly still and may show small movements called hippus.

These cells send signals through the sensory pathway to the oculomotor nerve. Specifically, the parasympathetic part from the Edinger-Westphal nucleus triggers the sphincter pupillae to contract. This prevents light aberrations and helps the eye maintain its expected acuity in bright conditions. In the dark, the dilator pupillae contract via sympathetic nerves to widen the opening. This allows the eye to admit sufficient light for vision.

Human pupils show significant variation based on age and environment. In bright light, a pupil might constrict to a diameter of 1.5 to 4 millimeters. In dark conditions, the diameter can expand to between 3 and 8 mm. At the peak age of 15, a dark-adapted pupil can range from 4 mm to 9 mm. After age 25, the average pupil size generally decreases. Some individuals may also experience hippus, which is a small oscillation or movement of the pupil.

Beyond light, many factors influence pupil size. Solving simple multiplication problems can cause the pupil to change. The act of recollection can also cause dilation. However, if the brain processes information above its maximum capacity, the pupils may contract. Emotional states also play a role, as both positive and negative arousal can affect size. Some rare individuals can even exert voluntary control over their iris muscles to change pupil size on command.

Different species possess unique pupil shapes adapted to their needs. While humans have circular pupils, others have vertical slits, such as cats, foxes, and crocodiles. Some animals, like goats, sheep, and horses, have horizontally oriented pupils. Even more unusual are the W-shaped pupils of the cuttlefish.

Some animals, like llamas and camels, have rectangular pupils with serrated edges called an umbraculum. When these pupils shrink, the edges mesh together like fangs. This specialized structure can help shield the eye from bright light.

Medical conditions and substances can also alter pupil behavior. The drug pilocarpine causes miosis, while atropine causes mydriasis and paralysis of accommodation. Opioids typically cause constriction, whereas substances like cocaine or amphetamines cause dilation. A condition called bene dilitatism occurs when optic nerves are partially damaged. This results in chronically widened pupils that cannot respond properly to light. This can make bright light painful and make it difficult to see in the dark.
