Procellariids have evolved specific physical traits to master life at sea. Most species have a high aspect ratio, meaning their wings are long and narrow. They also have heavy wing loading, which requires them to maintain high speeds to stay airborne. To save energy, many use dynamic soaring by gliding across wave fronts to use wind gradients. Others use slope soaring by turning into the wind to gain height before gliding down.

Some, like the giant petrels, have a shoulder-lock. This is a sheet of tendon that locks the wing in an extended position. This allows them to keep their wings out without using muscle effort.

Within the family, the five main groups show amazing variety in size and behavior. The fulmarine petrels include the massive giant petrels and the snow petrel. The diving petrels are the smallest, with wingspans of only about 30 centimeters. They are compact and use their short wings to move efficiently underwater. Gadfly petrels, specifically the 35 species in the genus Pterodroma, are known for their erratic, helter-skelter flight.

These birds are colonial breeders, meaning they nest in large groups. They exhibit site philopatry, which is the tendency to return to the same nesting site every year. They also show long-term mate fidelity, staying with the same partner for many seasons.

Life for a procellariid is a cycle of intense effort and long durations. Each breeding season, a pair lays only a single white egg. The parents must take turns incubating the egg and foraging for food. Because the feeding areas can be very far from the nest, the incubation and chick-rearing periods are exceptionally long.

Despite their success, they face modern threats. Introduced species often attack adults and chicks in colonies. Additionally, long-line fisheries pose a risk to these wandering travelers of the sea.
