Gastropods, which are a group of molluscs, have also evolved various proboscis types. In these animals, the proboscis is an elongation of the snout that can retract into the body. It can be used for sensing the environment, feeding, or capturing prey. Scientists have identified three major types: pleurembolic, acrembolic, and intraembolic. Acrembolic proboscises are usually found in parasitic gastropods and are fully retractable. These animals use hydraulic pressure from the musculature of the head-foot to protrude the organ. Specialized retractor muscles are then used to pull it back in.

Vertebrates show much larger examples of this anatomical feature. The trunk of an elephant and the elongated nose of a tapir are both considered proboscises.

Even the snout of a male elephant seal falls into this category. Many other mammals possess similar features, such as the aardvark, the elephant shrew, and the echidna. The proboscis monkey is named specifically for its enormous nose. There are even extinct animals, like the Macrauchenia and Moeritherium, that possessed these features.

Some fish also exhibit a proboscis-like structure. Notable examples include the swordfish, the marlin, and the sailfish. Other fish like the paddlefish and the elephant fish also feature these elongated parts. These structures are often used for specialized hunting or feeding in aquatic environments. This shows how a similar biological concept can appear across very different groups of animals.

Studying the proboscis helps scientists understand how form and function evolve together. For example, researchers studying insect mouthparts have learned how different species adapt to various fluid foods. Some insects use their proboscises for nectar, while others use them for plant sap, tree sap, or even dung. Some species, like the Heliconius butterflies, have even adapted to use pollen as a complementary food.
