About 110,000 years ago, huge glaciers began to move south. These glaciers scraped the landscape and leveled the ground. They picked up geologic material as they moved. About 10,000 years ago, the glaciers retreated. They left behind material called till. Wind also moved soil to create loess deposits. These deposits helped make the prairie soil very rich.
Many animals and people shaped the prairie. Native people used fire for thousands of years. They used it to help with hunting and safety. Large animals like bison, elk, and deer also lived here. Bison are very important to the ecosystem. They eat mostly grass, which helps flowers grow. Their dung provides nutrients to the soil. It also supports over 1,000 insect species. Some insects, like dung beetles, only live on this waste. In the United States, many states have prairies. These include North Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. Many states in the east, like Iowa and Illinois, also have them.

The westernmost region is the shortgrass prairie, which is quite arid and receives only about 12 inches of rain annually. Moving eastward, you find the mixed-grass prairie. The easternmost region is the tallgrass prairie, which is much wetter and receives over 30 inches of rain per year. 
These ecosystems are fire-dependent, meaning they rely on regular burning to survive. Fire plays a critical role by removing trees and clearing away dead plant matter. It also changes nutrient availability in the soil through the production of ash. While fire kills the vascular tissue of trees, it does not destroy prairie species. This is because up to 75% of the total plant biomass stays below the soil surface. Prairie plants have deep roots, sometimes reaching 20 feet down, allowing them to regrow quickly. Without these periodic disturbances from fire or grazing, trees would encroach on the land and cast shade, which suppresses the understory.
Large animals, particularly the bison, act as active participants in the prairie's health. Bison shape the environment through grazing, trampling with their hooves, and wallowing. Because bison prefer eating grass over flowering plants, they help increase the diversity of plant species. Their dung is also a vital nutrient source for the soil. It supports over 1,000 insect species, including specialist dung beetles that rely solely on bison feces. For thousands of years, Native Americans also used fire as a tool to assist with hunting, transportation, and safety, helping to maintain this high level of biodiversity.
Human history on the prairie has caused massive changes to the landscape. Early European settlers struggled with the dense, heavy soil. Traditional wooden plows often bounced off the surface or became stuck. This changed in 1837 when John Deere developed a steel moldboard plow. This tool could cut through tough roots and handle the fertile soil, making large-scale farming possible. 
The impact of human land use can be seen in historical ecological disasters. When the eastern tallgrass prairies were plowed, the strong root systems that held the soil in place were destroyed. During severe droughts, this led to the Dust Bowl. Winds picked up the unprotected soil, creating "black blizzards" of airborne dirt that covered 19 states. This disaster forced 400,000 people to leave the region and contributed to the Great Depression. Today, scientists are looking for new ways to use these lands. Some suggest growing prairie plants for biofuels to reduce global warming by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
