The city grew in stages as its work changed. At first, the port helped move coal. A railway called the Eastern Line connected the port to coal mines in Enugu.

History shows how the city was named and built. A man named Frederick Lugard founded the port in 1912. In 1913, he named it after Lewis Harcourt. Harcourt was a leader for the colonies at that time. The city grew by adding many nearby villages. These included places like Diobu, Oroworukwo, and Rumuomasi. The native Ikwerre people have lived in the area for a long time. They call the city Rebisi or Ozugboko.

Port Harcourt is a major port city and the capital of Rivers State in Nigeria.

It is located within the oil-rich Niger Delta region. The city sits along the Bonny River. Port Harcourt is the fifth most populous city in Nigeria. It follows Lagos, Kano, Ibadan, and Benin in size. As of 2023, the urban population is approximately 3,480,000 people. The metropolitan area is even larger. In 2015, United Nations estimates placed the metropolitan population at 2,344,000. This area has grown significantly over time. In 1950, the population was only 59,752 people.

The city was founded in 1912 by Frederick Lugard. He was the governor of the Northern and Southern Nigeria Protectorates. The port was built to export coal. Geologist Albert Ernest Kitson discovered coal in Enugu in 1909. The British built the Eastern Line railway to connect the coal mines to the port.

The city received its name in August 1913. Lugard named it after Lewis Harcourt. Harcourt was the Secretary of State for the Colonies at that time. The native Ikwerre people have long called the area Rebisi or Ozugboko. The city grew by absorbing several nearby villages. These included Oroworukwo, Oromeruezimgbu, Nkpogu, and Rumuomasi.

The economy of Port Harcourt changed in the mid-20th century. Crude oil was discovered in Oloibiri in 1956. In 1958, the first shipment of Nigerian crude oil was exported through the city. This shifted the economy toward petroleum. The industry brought modernization and urbanization to the region. The city saw the construction of overpasses and city blocks. Taller and more substantial buildings began to appear. The Point Block of the Rivers State Secretariat is an icon of this growth. It has 18 stories. This makes it the tallest building in the Southeast and South-South geopolitical zones combined.

Today, Port Harcourt is a massive industrial hub. It is the chief oil-refining city in Nigeria. There are two main refineries located at Eleme. These are operated by the Port Harcourt Refining Company. Together, they process around 210,000 barrels of crude oil every day.

Many multinational firms have offices in the city. Companies like Shell, Chevron, and Agip operate here. Rivers State is one of Nigeria's wealthiest states. This wealth comes largely from foreign exchange revenue from the oil industry. The city also serves as a vital commercial and industrial center.

The climate in Port Harcourt is a tropical monsoon climate. This means there are long, heavy rainy seasons. There are also very short dry seasons. December to February are the only true dry months. The heaviest rain usually occurs in September. The average temperature stays relatively constant throughout the year. It is typically around 26.55 °C. This is slightly lower than the average temperature for the rest of Nigeria.

The city is also vulnerable to sea level rise due to its low elevation.

In recent years, the city has faced serious environmental challenges. Residents have dealt with particle pollution, known as soot, since late 2016. This soot covers clothes, cars, and buildings in a black layer. In 2016, air pollution readings reached 270 micrograms per cubic meter. The U.S. EPA considers this level unhealthy for everyone.

Between 2016 and 2018, air quality was in the unhealthy range for many days. Some days were even ranked as hazardous. Possible sources include illegal refineries, gas flaring, and petro-chemical companies. The Ministry of Environment found pollution levels 11 times higher than WHO specifications. This has impacted visibility, soil, and water.

Despite these challenges, the city remains a center for education and culture. There are many tertiary institutions, such as Rivers State University and the University of Port Harcourt.
