The term "china" became common in English because of these 17th-century imports. The European name "porcelain" actually comes from the Italian word "porcellana," meaning cowrie shell. This was because the surface of the ceramic resembled the shell. Today, the industry remains very large. In 2021, the global market for porcelain tableware was estimated at US$22.1 billion.

Potters can apply decoration under the glaze or over the glaze. Underglaze decoration uses pigments like cobalt oxide or copper. This allows for beautiful designs, such as the famous blue-and-white styles. Overglaze enamels allow for even more colors to be used. Some pieces are "once-fired," meaning the glaze and body are fired together. Others undergo multiple firings. A piece might be "biscuit-fired" at 1,000 degrees Celsius first. Then, it is coated in glaze and fired again at temperatures of 1,200 degrees Celsius or higher. This ensures the colors remain vibrant and the surface stays smooth.
