These included Galileo's The Assayer in 1632 and Robert Hooke's Micrographia in 1665. However, Isaac Newton's Principia, published in 1687, was too difficult for most people to understand. This difficulty created a demand for popularizations of Newton's complex ideas. By 1830, astronomer John Herschel noted that the public needed digests of scientific branches. He believed these summaries should show what has been done and what remains to be accomplished.

Mary Somerville was a highly successful figure in the nineteenth-century science writing surge. Her book, On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences, was published in 1834. It was designed specifically for a mass audience and contained very little mathematics. The book was quite successful, with ten different editions published. It was also translated into multiple languages. Until Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species in 1859, Somerville's book was the most popular science title from her publisher, John Murray.
Popular science also plays a significant role in cultural and political discourse. It can spark major debates regarding scientific topics. For example, books like The Mismeasure of Man and The Bell Curve have stirred long-running controversies. These discussions often involve complex subjects like biological determinism and the biological components of intelligence.
