He wanted to return to fundamental Christian values. He believed that many people in the West were moving away from religious truths. By stepping down in 2013, he did something very rare. He was the first pope to resign since the year 1415. This decision allowed him to retire due to his advanced age. His successor, Pope Francis, was elected to follow his path in March 2013.

He was born in Marktl, Bavaria, to Joseph Ratzinger Sr. and Maria Ratzinger. His father was a police officer who strongly opposed the Nazi regime. Because of this opposition, the family faced harassment and demotions. During World War II, Ratzinger was conscripted into the Hitler Youth, though he was an unenthusiastic member. In 1943, he was drafted into the German anti-aircraft corps as a Luftwaffenhelfer. He later trained in the infantry before deserting in 1945 as Allied forces approached. He spent time in United States prisoner of war camps before being released in June 1945.

Following the war, Ratzinger dedicated himself to academic and religious study.

He and his brother Georg entered Saint Michael Seminary in Traunstein. In 1951, he was ordained as a priest in Freising. His academic career progressed rapidly through several German universities. He earned a Doctor of Theology degree from the University of Munich in 1953. By 1958, at age 31, he had become a full professor. He taught at institutions including the University of Bonn, the University of Münster, and the University of Tübingen. During this time, he was deeply influenced by the philosopher Romano Guardini.

Benedict's rise through the Church hierarchy was marked by significant responsibility.

In 1977, he was appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising. He was also created a cardinal by Pope Paul VI that same year. This was considered an unusual promotion because he had very little pastoral experience. In 1981, he became the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. This office is one of the most important departments in the Roman Curia. He also served as a close confidant to Pope John Paul II. For twenty-five years, he was a major figure in setting Church priorities.

Upon the death of John Paul II in 2005, Ratzinger was elected pope during a conclave.

He chose the name Benedict XVI to honor Benedict XV and Benedict of Nursia. His papacy was defined by a defense of traditional Catholic doctrine and liturgy. He often spoke against relativism, which he saw as the denial of objective moral truths. He sought to counter the secularization of Western countries by returning to fundamental Christian values. He also encouraged the use of Latin and revived the Tridentine Mass. Because of his focus on art and traditional vestments, he was called "the pope of aesthetics."

His leadership was not without significant challenges and criticisms.

Public health officials and activists criticized his handling of sexual abuse cases within the Church. He also faced opposition regarding his stance on the use of condoms in areas with high HIV transmission. Despite these tensions, he worked to strengthen relationships between the Church and the arts. He also established personal ordinariates for former Anglicans and Methodists who joined the Catholic Church. These structures helped integrate different Christian traditions into the Catholic faith.

In 2013, Benedict XVI made a historic decision to resign.

He cited health reasons related to his advanced age. He was the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415. He was also the first to resign without external pressure since Celestine V in 1294. This resignation paved the way for the 2013 conclave that elected Pope Francis. Benedict's life remains a significant study in the intersection of theology, politics, and global religious leadership.
