There are several different ways to design and build these structures. Historically, floating bridges were often constructed using wood. Pontoons were created by lashing barrels together, using rafts of timbers, or using simple boats. These sections were maneuvered into place and then anchored to the land or the underwater floor. To form a road, builders used wooden stringers called balks and covered them with cross planks called chesses.

Modern pontoon bridges are different and often use pre-fabricated floating structures. These can be made from various materials, including metal, rubber, wood, or concrete. The decking can also vary, ranging from modular metal to asphalt or concrete over a metal frame.

Humanity has used pontoon bridges since ancient times, and their history is filled with significant military and civil events. In China, the Zhou dynasty text, the Shi Jing, records that King Wen of Zhou created a pontoon bridge in the 11th century BC. Later, during the Qin dynasty, China built more secure permanent bridges linked with iron chains. In the Greco-Roman era, the Greek writer Herodotus recorded several instances of these bridges. The Roman Emperor Caligula famously built a bridge at Baiae in 37 AD. He even rode a horse across this two-mile bridge while wearing the armor of Alexander the Great. This massive construction cost a huge amount of money and caused discontent among his people.

In 1218, during the Fifth Crusade, Crusaders built two bridges across the Nile using 38 boats. These bridges have continued to play roles in modern history. While useful, pontoon bridges have specific vulnerabilities that engineers must consider. Because they are often lightweight or provisional, they can be easily damaged. A bridge can be dislodged or flooded if the weight limit is exceeded. They can also sway or oscillate in dangerous ways due to storms, floods, or fast-moving loads.

Additionally, ice or floating objects, known as flotsam, can collect on the pontoons. This accumulation increases the drag from the river current, which can potentially damage the entire structure.

Despite these risks, some pontoon bridges have proven to be remarkably long-lasting. The Hobart Bridge in Tasmania was built in 1943 and lasted for 21 years before being replaced. The fourth Galata Bridge in Istanbul, Turkey, was built in 1912 and operated for 80 years.

These examples show that with proper design, floating structures can serve communities for many decades. They remain a unique solution for crossing deep or wide water where traditional bridges are too difficult to build.
