He described measuring from finger to finger, and from the fingers to the palm and wrist. These measurements then related to the forearm and the upper arm. Art historian Richard Tobin suggested a specific geometric method for these proportions. He proposed that the Canon might use areal proportions based on the diagonal of a square. For example, the length of a middle finger bone might be the diagonal of a square based on the smallest bone.

This geometric process could be done using a simple tool. An artist could use a long cord with knots placed at specific intervals. These knots would represent the diagonal of a square drawn from a previous length. This method allowed for a geometric progression across the entire body. The distance from the crown of the head to the chin might equal the length of the forearm. The distance from the crown to the clavicle might equal the length of the upper arm. This rigorous calculation helped create a sense of organic vitality in his work.

A key part of his style was a pose called contrapposto. This is a method of visualizing the shifting balance of a body. In this pose, the figure places most of its weight on one leg. This creates a rhythmic contrast in the torso, as the pelvis and thorax tilt in opposite directions. The feet appear poised between standing and walking.
