Pokémon is a massive world of games, shows, and cards.

You play the role of a Pokémon Trainer. Your main goal is to travel and explore the world. You also try to catch many different species to fill a guide called a Pokédex.
The idea for this world came from a man named Satoshi Tajiri.
Building the franchise took a lot of teamwork. Tajiri started a group called Game Freak in 1986. He worked with an artist named Ken Sugimori and a composer named Junichi Masuda. They released the first games on the Game Boy on 27 February 1996.
Pokémon is everywhere in our world today. It is one of the best-selling video game franchises ever. You can find it in animated films, manga books, and trading cards.
Pokémon is a massive Japanese media franchise. It includes video games, animated series, films, and a trading card game.
In the games, players take on the role of a Pokémon Trainer. Trainers have three primary objectives. First, they travel to explore the vast Pokémon world. Second, they seek to discover and catch every species to complete a digital guide called a Pokédex. Third, they train a team of Pokémon to engage in battles.
Capturing a Pokémon requires a specific tool called a Poké Ball.
Battles are a core part of the experience. Trainers can battle wild Pokémon or Pokémon owned by other people. Because the franchise is designed for children, these battles are never graphic. There is no blood or gore. Pokémon do not die during these encounters. Instead, they simply faint when they are defeated. A Trainer can then take their Pokémon to a Pokémon Center to be rejuvenated. This cycle of battling and resting allows players to improve their skills and grow as Trainers.
Satoshi Tajiri conceived the original idea for Pokémon.
Developing the franchise required significant teamwork. Tajiri formed an informal group called Game Freak in 1986. He worked with illustrator Ken Sugimori and composer Junichi Masuda. They developed the puzzle game *Quinty* before focusing on Pokémon. The project was originally called *Capsule Monsters*, or *Capumon*. Because that name could not be trademarked, they chose *Pocket Monsters*. This was eventually shortened to Pokémon. The first games were released on the Game Boy on 27 February 1996. These games became massive hits and led to a global phenomenon known as "Pokémania" between 1998 and 2000.
Today, the franchise is managed by several major entities. Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures jointly own the property. Game Freak develops the core role-playing games. Nintendo publishes these games exclusively for its own consoles. Creatures manages the trading card game and some spin-off titles. In 1998, these companies formed The Pokémon Company (TPC) to manage the brand in Asia. Since 2009, The Pokémon Company International (TPCi) has managed the franchise in all regions outside of Asia. This organized structure helps maintain the brand's massive global presence.
Pokémon continues to influence popular culture through new technologies.
