Through these dialogues, Plato explored theoretical and practical philosophy. He used the dialectic form to examine complex ideas. This method involves a series of questions to reach truth. This approach is often linked to the Socratic method. It challenged the focus on natural philosophy common in his time.

One of his most significant contributions is the Theory of Forms. This theory attempts to solve the problem of universals. Plato believed that the physical world is an imitation of an eternal world. He was influenced by the ideas of Heraclitus and Parmenides.

Plato sought to reconcile these opposing views on change and stability.

Plato's early life was marked by the Peloponnesian War. His brothers, Adeimantus and Glaucon, fought at the battle of Megara. During his youth, Plato was a poet. He wrote lyric poems and tragedies. However, he abandoned poetry after meeting Socrates. He reportedly burned his early poems to focus on philosophy. Later, he studied mathematics with several scholars.

He also studied with Pythagoreans in southern Italy. This taught him that mathematics provides a secure basis for abstract thinking.

Around 383 BC, Plato founded the Academy in Athens. The school was located near the grove of Hecademus. It began as a house with a garden. It became a center for studying philosophy and mathematics. A very famous student, Aristotle, joined the Academy in 367 BC.

Plato also spent time in Syracuse. He made three separate trips there to engage with local politics. He hoped to tutor Dionysius II to become a "philosopher king."

Plato's political experiences were often difficult. After the defeat of Athens by Sparta, the Thirty Tyrants ruled the city. Two of Plato's relatives were part of this group. Plato declined an invitation to join their administration. He was disillusioned by the atrocities they committed. The execution of Socrates by the Athenian democracy also changed his life. It ended his plans for a political career. This event deeply influenced the themes in his later dialogues.

Plato's intellectual legacy is immense and enduring. His complete works have survived for over 2,400 years. This is rare compared to his contemporaries. His ideas shaped Christian, Jewish, and Islamic philosophy through Neoplatonism. The philosopher Alfred North Whitehead famously noted its importance. He said the European philosophical tradition consists of "footnotes to Plato."
