Beyond these living fish, scientists have identified at least four fossil species. These extinct species include *Platax altissimus*, *Platax macropterygious*, *Platax papilio*, and *Platax woodwardii*.

The history of classifying these fish involves many scientific discoveries. Georges Cuvier first used the genus name in 1816. He used it to classify *Platax boersii*, a name that remains correct today.

However, some early classifications were later corrected. For example, Cuvier originally placed *Platax ocellatus* in this genus. Scientists later determined it was actually a butterflyfish in the genus *Chaetodon*. Even the longfin batfish was once classified under a different genus by Cuvier.

Taxonomy, or the science of naming and grouping organisms, has seen many changes regarding Platax. In 1831, Cuvier and Valenciennes mistakenly classified the freshwater angelfish, *Pterophyllum scalare*, as *Platax scalaris*. This was a mistake because the angelfish is not closely related to marine batfish. Other species have also moved between genera. The species *Zabidius novemaculeatus* was described as a *Platax* by McCulloch in the early 1900s. It is now correctly placed in the genus *Zabidius*, though it remains in the same Ephippidae family.

Platax species are widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific. Their range reaches from the Red Sea in the western Indian Ocean to Australia in the east.

Some species live in higher latitudes. These include the Ryukyu Islands in Japan and the eastern coast of Australia. However, their ranges are not all the same. For instance, *Platax pinnatus* is likely not found in the Indian Ocean. They are most commonly found near coral reefs and shipwrecks.
