In the Old Economy Village, the construction process was very specific. Workers used hand-split lath, which are thin strips of wood, to create a base for the plaster. These strips of oak were split using wedges, sledges, and tools called froes. Because hand-split lath is not uniform, the clay coat had to be thick to cover the irregular gaps.
