In 1942, he founded the Studio d'Essai, which later became the Club d'Essai.

Throughout his career, Schaeffer established several significant institutions and works. In 1951, he founded the Groupe de Recherche de Musique Concrète (GRMC). He later reformed this as the Groupe de Recherche Musicale (GRM) in 1958. His theoretical contributions are found in major texts like "Traité des objets musicaux" (1966). He also founded the music label Ocora in 1954 to preserve African rural soundscapes. One of his most notable musical examples is the "Étude aux chemins de fer," or Railroad Study.
