He was born in Paris on May 15, 1859. His father, Eugène, was a doctor who helped teach him. Pierre was very good at math and geometry from a young age. One of his most famous discoveries involved crystals. In 1880, Pierre and his brother Jacques found something called piezoelectricity. This is a way that crystals make electricity when they are squeezed. They even built a special tool called a quartz electrometer to help them. They also found that electricity can make crystals change shape. This discovery is still used today in digital electronics. Pierre also studied how temperature affects magnets. He found a specific temperature where magnets stop working. This is known as the Curie temperature.

Pierre also worked closely with his wife, Marie Curie. They were pioneers in the study of radioactivity. This is a process where tiny parts of matter give off energy. Together, they discovered two new elements named polonium and radium. Their hard work earned them a very big honor. In 1903, they won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This made them the first married couple to win a Nobel Prize. They shared this award with a scientist named Henri Becquerel.

Curie's work on radioactivity was a major part of his career. He and Marie Curie were the first to use the term radioactivity. They worked together to isolate the elements polonium and radium. By using magnetic fields, he showed that emissions could be positively charged, negatively charged, or neutral. These are known as alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. He and his student, Albert Laborde, also identified the continuous emission of heat from radium. This was the first discovery of nuclear energy.

In 1903, Pierre and Marie Curie shared the Nobel Prize in Physics. They shared this award with Henri Becquerel. This achievement made them the first married couple to win a Nobel Prize. This began a massive family legacy. Their daughter, Irène, and her husband, Frédéric Joliot-Curie, also won Nobel Prizes. Pierre's scientific influence is measured in many ways. In 1910, the Radiology Congress named the "curie" after the Curies. One curie equals 3.7 × 10^10 decays per second, or 37 gigabecquerels. This unit describes the intensity of radioactive material.

Pierre's life included many different interests. In the late nineteenth century, he investigated spiritualism. He wanted to see if physics could explain these phenomena. He viewed these sessions as scientific experiments. He took very detailed notes and monitored various parameters. However, he considered himself an atheist. His scientific approach remained steady even when studying the unknown.
