Philosophy of science is a special way of thinking about how we learn about the world. 

One major task is solving the demarcation problem. This is the hard job of telling science apart from pseudoscience. Pseudoscience is when ideas pretend to be scientific to look important. 
Science has a very long history of being studied. People have thought about science since the time of Aristotle. However, philosophy of science became its own subject in the 20th century. This happened after a group called the logical positivists began their work. They wanted to find ways to make sure all statements were meaningful. Later, Karl Popper criticized these ideas to help set new standards. In 1962, Thomas Kuhn wrote a very important book. His book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, changed how we see progress. 
Thomas Kuhn argued that science does not just grow in a straight line. Instead, he said science moves through things called paradigms. A paradigm is a set of questions and practices used in a certain time. 
Philosophers also look at how science explains the things we see.

A central challenge in this field is the demarcation problem. This is the task of distinguishing science from non-science. One major concern is identifying pseudoscience, which is non-science masquerading as science. 
The history of these ideas stretches back to the time of Aristotle. However, philosophy of science emerged as a distinct discipline in the 20th century. This followed the logical positivist movement, which sought to ensure all philosophical statements were meaningful. Karl Popper later criticized logical positivism to help establish modern standards for methodology. In 1962, Thomas Kuhn published The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. 
Different approaches exist for how to validate scientific theories. W. V. Quine and others promoted a coherentist approach. In this view, a theory is validated if it fits into a coherent whole of observations. Other thinkers, such as Stephen Jay Gould, ground science in axiomatic assumptions. One such assumption is the uniformity of nature. Meanwhile, Paul Feyerabend argued against the existence of a single scientific method. He suggested that all approaches, including supernatural ones, should be allowed. 
Philosophers also study what constitutes a good scientific explanation. One early model is the deductive-nomological model. This model suggests an explanation must deduce a phenomenon from a scientific law. However, this model faces criticism when dealing with chance or unpredictable events. Wesley Salmon developed a model focusing on statistical relevance to an outcome. Other thinkers argue that good explanations must unify different phenomena or provide causal mechanisms. Some use Occam's razor to find the best explanation. This principle counsels choosing the simplest available explanation.
Justifying scientific reasoning is another complex task. David Hume famously devised the problem of induction to highlight this difficulty. Induction involves inferring general statements from specific instances. It is not always clear how to justify this process to reach certain knowledge. Some suggest that induction only makes a general statement more probable. Others argue science uses abductive reasoning, which is inference to the best explanation. This means scientists hypothesize explanations for what they observe rather than just generalizing. This process remains a subject of intense debate among philosophers.
Finally, philosophy of science applies to specific scientific fields. These are often called philosophies of the particular sciences. For instance, Einstein's general relativity raises questions about the nature of time. In biology, psychology, and the social sciences, thinkers ask if objectivity is possible. They wonder if these studies are shaped by social relations or human values. In medicine, the question of what counts as science can be a life-or-death matter. Even the foundations of statistics involve questions about the validity of reasoning.
