Because the plates are moving, the region experiences significant seismic activity. The USGS has recorded many large earthquakes here. Some authors once thought this region had low seismic activity. However, many earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.2 or higher have been recorded. For example, northern Samar had a magnitude 7.3 earthquake in 1897. In 1924, southern Mindanao experienced a very large magnitude 8.2 earthquake. More recently, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit Samar in 2012. This quake had a hypocenter depth of 34.9 km.

Many other large earthquakes have occurred near the Mindanao area. In 1911, an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 occurred offshore Mindanao. In 1943, another large quake of magnitude 7.8 was recorded. The region remains very active with many large events. In 1995, a magnitude 7.2 quake hit offshore Samar. In 2001, a magnitude 7.5 quake occurred offshore Mindanao. Even more recently, magnitude 7.6 quakes were recorded in 2012 and 2023. These events show the immense energy within the Philippine subduction zone.

The Philippine Trench is part of a larger system of oceanic features. There are several other trenches located in the Philippines. These include the Manila Trench and the Negros Trench. Other examples are the Sulu Trench, the Cotabato Trench, and the East Luzon Trench. All of these trenches are connected to the complex tectonics of the region.
