Phil Keoghan is a prominent television presenter and producer from New Zealand.
Keoghan’s approach to life is defined by a personal philosophy called "No Opportunity Wasted," or NOW. This mantra was born from a challenging experience during his youth. While filming the New Zealand children's show Spot On, Keoghan went diving to explore a shipwreck. The wreck was the MS Mikhail Lermontov. During the dive, he became separated from his partner in the ship's ballroom. He suffered a panic attack and experienced what he described as a near-death experience. After being rescued, he chose to face his fears rather than avoid them.
To live out this philosophy, Keoghan maintains a list of exotic and challenging goals. He has accomplished many items on this list, such as breaking a world bungee jumping record. He has also dived in the world's longest underwater caves and eaten a meal atop an erupting volcano. He even renewed his wedding vows underwater while feeding sharks. These experiences inspired him to co-develop the television series No Opportunity Wasted, which premiered in 2004. He also authored a companion book titled "No Opportunity Wasted: 8 Ways to Create a List for the Life You Want."
Keoghan has used his professional platform to support important causes and humanitarian efforts. Following the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, he returned to his hometown to check on his family. He also recorded segments for The Early Show to encourage viewers to donate to the New Zealand Red Cross. He worked to promote tourism, which is a fundamental part of the New Zealand economy. Additionally, he participated in recording a new safety video for Air New Zealand's domestic jet fleet. In 2012, he was named one of six "Emerging Leaders" at the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards for these efforts.
Cycling is another major passion that Keoghan pursues for both fitness and charity. In 2009, he participated in an event called "Ride Across America." He biked from Los Angeles to New York City to raise money for multiple sclerosis research. The ride included stops in 39 different cities. This event successfully raised $500,000, with over $400,000 coming from in-store donations during the trip. Keoghan later produced a documentary movie about this journey titled The Ride, which premiered in 2011.
Keoghan also enjoys recreating historical sporting achievements. He researched Harry Watson, a New Zealander who was part of the first English-speaking team to ride in the Tour de France in 1928. To honor Watson’s legacy, Keoghan and his partner, Ben Cornell, rode the 1928 Tour de France course in 2013. They used a gear-less bicycle, similar to the equipment used by Watson's team. The 1928 course consisted of 22 legs and was much longer than the modern race. Their journey was captured in a film called Le Ride, which premiered at the New Zealand Film Festival in 2016.
Throughout his career, Keoghan has worked in more than seventy different countries. He has hosted a wide variety of programming, including National Geographic Explorer and the series Tough as Nails. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California, with his wife and producing partner, Louise Keoghan. Louise is an Australian-born producer who co-created several shows with him. Together, they continue to develop new content for television while pursuing their shared interest in adventure and storytelling.
