They made it their capital city. The Nabataeans were very smart. They knew how to carve buildings into cliffs. They also built ways to catch and save rainwater. This helped them live in the dry desert.
In the 1st century AD, the city was very busy. It had about 20,000 people. Then, the Roman Empire took control in 106 AD. They built new roads like the Petra Roman Road.
Later, the city began to change. Trade moved to the sea. A big earthquake in 363 AD broke many buildings. The city lost its power. By the early Islamic era, most people had left. A traveler named Johann Ludwig Burckhardt found it again in 1812. Today, almost a million people visit Petra every year.
Petra is a famous ancient city located in southern Jordan.

The city is special because of how it was built. The people there were very skillful at stone carving. They carved beautiful buildings directly into the high cliffs. They also built smart water systems to catch rainwater. This helped them survive in the dry, barren desert. This skill in water harvesting allowed the city to grow.
The Nabataeans were nomadic Arab people who settled here. They moved with their herds to find water and pasture. In the 4th century BC, they made Petra their home. By the second century BC, it became their capital city. They became very rich through the incense trade routes. They used their location to become a major trading hub.
At its peak in the 1st century AD, the city was very large. It had an estimated 20,000 people living there. One famous building is the Al-Khazneh structure. Some think it was a tomb for King Aretas IV. In 106 AD, the Roman Empire took control of the land. They renamed the area Arabia Petraea and built new roads.
Over time, the city began to lose its importance. New trade routes moved to the sea instead of the land. A huge earthquake in 363 AD destroyed many buildings. Later, the city was mostly abandoned during the early Islamic era. A Swiss traveler named Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it in 1812.
Petra is an ancient archaeological site located in southern Jordan.

The Nabataeans were a nomadic Arab tribe that settled in the area around the 4th century BC. They eventually made Petra the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom in the second century BC. The inhabitants originally called the city Raqmu.
Petra reached its peak of splendor during the 1st century AD. At this time, the population reached an estimated 20,000 inhabitants. One of the most famous structures from this era is Al-Khazneh. Some scholars believe this building was a mausoleum for the Nabataean king Aretas IV. The city featured many impressive rock-cut buildings carved directly into the cliffs. These structures were part of a highly organized urban center. The Nabataeans also worshipped several deities, such as Dushara and al-Uzza. Their architecture reflected their cultural and religious identity.
In 106 AD, the Roman Empire annexed the region. They renamed the area Arabia Petraea.
However, the city's importance began to decline due to several factors. New sea-based trade routes emerged, which took business away from the land routes.
For a long time, the site was unknown to the Western world. In the 12th century, Crusaders built fortresses like Alwaeira Castle nearby.
Today, Petra is a powerful symbol of Jordan. It is the country's most-visited tourist attraction.
