Peter the Great was a powerful leader of Russia.

Peter's life was full of learning and hard work.
His path to power was not always easy.
Peter made many huge changes to help Russia grow.

Many things we know about Russia today started with him. He created new ways to run the government. He started the Governing Senate in 1711 and the Table of Ranks in 1722. These systems helped organize how the country worked. He also encouraged higher education for everyone. His many reforms helped change Russia into a modern nation. His influence can still be seen in many Russian institutions today.
Peter I, known as Peter the Great, was a transformative leader of the Russian state.

Peter's path to power was marked by intense family and political struggles. When his father died in 1676, the throne passed to his half-brother, Feodor III. After Feodor died in 1682, a dispute arose between the Miloslavsky and Naryshkin families. Peter was only ten years old when the Boyar Duma chose him as co-tsar. He ruled jointly with his blind half-brother, Ivan V. During this time, their sister Sophia acted as regent and held most of the power. Peter even witnessed political violence during rebellions by the streltsy, which were elite military corps. Eventually, Peter took full control of the government after Ivan died in 1696.
As a young man, Peter sought knowledge through practical experience and study. He was fascinated by shipbuilding and spent time at the Izmaylovo Estate. He befriended Dutch carpenters to learn how to rig sails and build masts.

To expand Russia's influence, Peter focused on building a strong military and navy. At the time, Russia had very little access to the sea. He launched the Azov campaigns to capture the Ottoman fortress of Azov. After an initial failure in 1695, he built a large navy in Voronezh. In 1696, he successfully captured Azov with thirty ships.
Peter initiated a cultural revolution to westernize Russian society. He introduced the Julian calendar in December 1699 to align with Western systems. In 1703, he established the first Russian newspaper, Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti. He also designed a new civil script to reform Russian writing. One of his most famous achievements was founding the city of Saint Petersburg in 1703. He moved the capital from Moscow to Saint Petersburg in 1712.
Peter's administrative reforms created lasting structures for the Russian government. In 1711, he established the Governing Senate to help manage the state. In 1717, he created the Collegium to organize government departments. He also introduced the Table of Ranks in 1722. This system helped organize the civil and military services. To promote learning, he founded the Russian Academy of Sciences and Saint Petersburg State University in 1724. These institutions were designed to bring modern scientific thought to the empire.
Peter's reign lasted for approximately 43 years and changed the course of history. He rose from the lowest naval ranks to become an admiral by 1721. He was a physically striking man, standing very tall and often described as a "second Goliath."
