Canisius was born in 1521 in Nijmegen, located in the Duchy of Guelders. At that time, this area was part of the Habsburg Netherlands within the Holy Roman Empire. His father, Jacob Kanis, was a wealthy burgermeister, which is a high-ranking city official. After his mother, Ægidia van Houweningen, died shortly after his birth, Peter focused on his education. He attended the University of Cologne and earned a master's degree in 1540 at age 19. In 1543, he met Peter Faber, a founder of the Society of Jesus. This meeting led Canisius to become the first Dutchman to join the Jesuits. He completed his theological studies and was ordained a priest in 1546.

His method for teaching involved a combination of preaching, writing, and establishing schools. He supervised the creation of the first Jesuit colleges for German speakers, often working with very few resources. He also engaged in public debates and taught at universities to defend his views. One of his most significant tools was his "German Catechism." A catechism is a book used to teach the basic principles of a religion. By writing in the German language, he made complex ideas accessible to common people. He also wrote several versions, including the *Summa doctrinae christianae* in 1554 and the *Catechismus minor* in 1556. His writings were so impactful that they were translated into almost every European language.

Canisius was also a major defender of Marian theology, which focuses on the Virgin Mary. In 1577, he published *De Maria virgine incomparabili et Dei Genitrice Sacrosancta Libri Quinque*. This five-book work was ordered by Pope Pius V to provide a factual account of Mary's role. In the first book, he traced historical documents regarding Mary's perpetual virginity. The second book explained the doctrine of her being the "Mother of God." The third book addressed Protestant arguments regarding the Bible. The final books explored the Catholic belief in the assumption of Mary. He even influenced common prayer by adding the phrase "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners" to the Hail Mary.

His influence extended to the highest levels of political power. Canisius exerted a strong influence on Emperor Ferdinand I. He once had to warn the Emperor in writing and in person about a married priest named Phauser. The Emperor's son, Maximilian II, had appointed Phauser as a court preacher. Canisius opposed Phauser in public disputations, which eventually led to the priest's dismissal. However, this event caused Maximilian II to hold a grudge against Canisius for the rest of his life. Despite such political tension, Canisius remained a popular and renowned preacher. He served as the main preacher in the Cathedral of Augsburg from 1559 to 1568.

Canisius's work led to significant geographical shifts in religious affiliation. Through his debates and teachings, he helped win Bavaria and the Rhineland back to the Catholic Church. He also successfully won converts in Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, and Poland. In Poland, his efforts helped the country return to the Catholic faith. By the time he finished his work in Germany, the Society of Jesus had grown from a small group into a powerful force. In 1562, he founded the institution that eventually became the University of Innsbruck. Later in life, he moved to Fribourg and founded the Jesuit Collège Saint-Michel to train young men for university studies.

Even in his final years, Canisius remained dedicated to his mission. In 1591, at age 70, he suffered a stroke that caused partial paralysis. He did not stop his work, however, and continued to write and preach using a secretary. He died in Fribourg on December 21, 1597. He was eventually buried in the church of the Jesuit College he had founded.
