Mapping the exact distance to this arm has been a challenge. For a long time, scientists believed it was quite distant. They thought it was 13,000 light-years away from Earth. However, new research published in 2005 changed this view.

This research suggested the arm is much closer to us. Current estimates place it at 6,400 light-years from the Solar System. This discovery significantly changed our understanding of the galaxy's structure.

Two major radio astronomy projects have worked to map these structures. The first project is the Japanese VERA project. It launched its efforts in 2001. The second is the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy Survey, or BeSSeL. This survey began its work in 2010.

Together, these projects have spent about 20 years collecting data. They aim to delineate the forms of the spiral arms. They study the galaxy from Galactic longitudes 2 to 240 degrees.

These scientists use a method called trigonometric parallax. This technique helps them measure distances to specific objects. They focus on water vapor and methanol masers. Masers are found in massive star-forming regions. These bright spots act as markers in space. By measuring these, they can trace the spiral arms more accurately. They even use carbon monoxide emission to extend these traces. This helps them see the arms in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Perseus Arm contains many famous and bright objects. One notable feature is the Double Cluster. It also contains several Messier objects. These are specific deep-sky objects identified by Charles Messier. These include the Crab Nebula, which is known as M1.

You can also find open clusters like M36, M37, and M38. Other objects in the arm include M52 and M103. These objects help astronomers study the composition of the arm.

Our own Solar System has a unique relationship with this arm. We live in a local structure called the Orion–Cygnus Arm. This arm is located inside of the Perseus Arm. There is ongoing speculation about how they are connected. Some scientists think the Orion–Cygnus Arm is a branch of the Perseus Arm. However, this idea is still unconfirmed. Studying the Perseus Arm helps us understand our own local galactic environment.
