Some streets are just for walking.

Some streets are only for people walking.
These areas can be small or very large. Some people use bikes or skates there.
Long ago, people built shops under roofs. These were like early walking paths. Today, many cities use these special zones. They help people move around safely.
A pedestrian zone is a place for people on foot.
These areas help cities in many ways. They can make the air cleaner and quieter. They also help people shop and walk safely. Sometimes, these zones can make local shops more busy.
People have had this idea for a long time. In the 1800s, Paris opened covered shopping halls. These were like early versions of malls.
Today, many cities have these zones. Some are small squares. Others are very large areas without any cars.
A pedestrian zone is a special part of a city.
Creating these zones can help a city in many ways. It is often called pedestrianisation. This can make the air cleaner and the streets quieter. It also helps prevent crashes between cars and people. Many cities do this to help local shops. When people walk, they might shop more often. This can make property values go up in that area. Sometimes, cars just move to the streets nearby instead of disappearing.
The idea of separating walkers from traffic is very old. It goes back at least to the Renaissance period. The first modern version appeared around the year 1800.
Modern pedestrian streets started appearing in the early 1900s. The first one in an existing street was in 1929. This happened on Limbecker Straße in Essen, Germany. The street was too narrow for both cars and people. By 1955, twenty-one German cities had closed streets to cars. In the United States, many cities tried this in the 1950s and 1960s. However, about 90% of those American projects were changed back to car areas.
Today, pedestrian zones come in many different sizes. Some are just a single square in a city.

A pedestrian zone is a specific area within a city or town designed for people on foot.
The process of turning a street into a walking area is called pedestrianisation. This change usually aims to improve accessibility and mobility for pedestrians. It can also enhance local business activities and shopping. Many cities use pedestrianisation to improve the local environment. This includes reducing air pollution and lowering noise levels. It also helps prevent crashes involving motor vehicles and pedestrians. Sometimes, motor traffic is simply displaced to surrounding areas rather than being removed. Even so, these schemes are often linked to significant falls in accidents. They can also lead to increased retail turnover and higher property values locally.
The concept of separating people from wheeled traffic is quite old. It dates back at least to the Renaissance period. The earliest modern implementation appeared around the year 1800.
Modern pedestrianisation of existing streets began in the early 20th century. The first instance seems to have occurred around 1929 in Essen, Germany. This took place on Limbecker Straße. This street was a very narrow shopping area. It could not safely accommodate both vehicles and pedestrians at once. Two other German cities followed this model in the early 1930s. After the Second World War, many European cities implemented similar plans. These were often done on an ad hoc basis through the early 1950s. By 1955, twenty-one German cities had closed at least one street to automobiles. However, only four of those were "true" pedestrian streets designed specifically for that purpose.
In the United States, pedestrianisation was common during the 1950s and 1960s. Downtown businesses used these zones to compete with new suburban shopping malls. Unfortunately, most of these initiatives were not successful in the long term. About 90% of these American projects were eventually changed back to motorised areas. By 2010, the situation in Germany was very different. There were around 3,000 pedestrian zones established in 170 cities. These zones are now a common feature in German cities. In the U.S., some major tourist areas found success. Examples include the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Other successes include the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas.

Pedestrian zones can vary greatly in size and type. A zone might be just a single square or a few streets. In contrast, a car-free development is much larger. These developments are designed so residents can live without owning a car. They rely on modes of transport other than the automobile. One type is the "limited access" model. This uses physical barriers to prevent motor vehicles from entering. In some places, like Cologne, these barriers are removable. Another type is the Vauban model, which focuses on being "parking-space-free." There are also car-free towns that have never allowed motor vehicles. Venice is a famous example located in a lagoon.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought new changes to city streets. Many cities pedestrianised more streets to encourage social distancing. This also provided more space for restaurants to use outdoor patios. In the United States, New York City closed up to 40% of its streets to cars. In Madrid, Spain, the city pedestrianised 75% of its streets and 80% of its spaces. This period also prompted radical new ideas for city design. In Barcelona, architects proposed the complete pedestrianisation of the whole city. This was part of the Manifesto for the Reorganisation of the City. This document was signed by 160 academics and 300 architects.
