Long ago, a group of people called the Pallavas ruled.

The Pallava dynasty ruled in southern India for a long time. They ruled from the year 275 to 897. Their capital city was Kanchipuram.
Historians have different ideas about where the Pallavas came from. Some think they once served the Satavahana Empire. They became independent after that empire fell. Others believe they were native to the Tamil region.
The Pallavas were a very strong power. They ruled parts of the Telugu and Tamil regions. During their rule, they fought with many other kingdoms. They fought the Chalukyas to the north. They also fought the Chola and Pandya kingdoms to the south.
The Pallavas are famous for their art. They built many beautiful stone temples. One great example is the Shore Temple.

The Pallava dynasty was a major power in southern India. They ruled for about 600 years from 275 to 897. Their kingdom covered much of the Deccan region. This area is also called Tondaimandalam.

How the Pallavas rose to power is still a big mystery. Historians have many different ideas about their origins. Some believe they once served the Satavahana Empire. They may have become independent after that empire fell. Other experts think they were native to the central Tamil plains.
Being a great power meant the Pallavas had many rivals. They often fought with the Chalukyas to their north. They also had conflicts with the Chola and Pandya kingdoms to the south.

The Pallavas left behind amazing things for us to see today. They were great supporters of Hindu Vaishnava temple architecture. They built magnificent stone temples and sculptures. One of their most famous works is the Shore Temple. This beautiful building is located in Mamallapuram. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They also created the Pallava script. This way of writing helped create many other scripts in Southeast Asia.
You can see the influence of the Pallavas in many places today. Their style of building helped start medieval southern Indian architecture. Some scholars think the ancient book Manasara inspired their work.

The Pallava dynasty was a powerful ruling family in southern India. They governed a large area known as the Deccan or Tondaimandalam. Their rule lasted for about 600 years, from 275 to 897 CE.

Historians still debate exactly how the Pallava dynasty began. One major theory suggests they were originally subordinate to the Satavahana Empire. In this view, the Pallavas were officers or governors in the southeastern part of the Satavahana territory. They likely became independent after the Satavahana power declined.

Political power for the Pallavas involved constant struggle and movement. They fought many battles to control their capital, Kanchipuram. At one point, the Cholas captured the city from them. Later, the Pallavas took it back from the Kalabhras in the mid-6th century. This victory is often linked to the reign of Simhavishnu, called the "lion of the earth."
The Pallavas reached a peak of influence under specific great leaders. Mahendravarman I ruled from 600 to 630 CE. His successor, Narasimhavarman I, ruled from 630 to 668 CE. Under these two kings, the Pallavas became a dominant southern Indian power. They controlled the southern Telugu region and northern parts of the Tamil region. Their strength allowed them to leave a lasting mark on the landscape of India.
One of the most important legacies of the Pallavas is their architecture. They were great patrons of Hindu Vaishnava temple architecture. This means they supported the building of temples dedicated to Vishnu. They established the foundations for medieval southern Indian architecture. Some scholars believe these designs were inspired by an ancient treatise called Manasara.
The Shore Temple in Mamallapuram is a premier example of their skill. This structure is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Pallavas also left a legacy through language and writing. They developed the Pallava script, which was used for administration. This script eventually evolved into the Tamil script and the Grantha script. Furthermore, the Pallava script influenced several other scripts used in Southeast Asia, such as the Khmer script.
Even the daily symbols of the dynasty reveal much about their culture. Their gold and silver coins often featured a maned lion. This lion served as the official emblem of the Pallavas. These coins also contained inscriptions in Sanskrit, Tamil, Prakrit, and even Kannada. This shows that the Pallavas managed a diverse and multilingual administration. Their history connects the ancient traditions of the Deccan to the modern cultures of South and Southeast Asia.
