The conflict featured some of the largest naval battles in human history. It involved many different nations working together as the Allies or as part of the Axis powers.

The war's origins began much earlier than the official start in 1941. In 1931, Japan invaded Manchuria to gain raw materials for its industry. By 1937, full-scale war broke out between Japan and the Republic of China following the Marco Polo Bridge Incident.

During this time, the Chinese Nationalist Party and the Communists formed an alliance to resist. Japan captured major cities like Shanghai and Nanjing. In Nanjing, the Japanese army committed many atrocities against civilians and prisoners of war.

Japan also moved into French Indochina in 1940 to expand its control.

A major shift occurred on December 7 and 8, 1941. Japan launched surprise attacks on several locations to expand its reach. They attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

After Midway, Japan struggled to replace its lost ships and aircraft. This was because the United States was producing much larger numbers of both.

Japan also used soldiers from its colonies, such as Korea and Taiwan. Some groups, like the Việt Minh, acted as pro-allied guerrillas to resist Japanese control.

The war reached its end through several rapid events in August 1945. The United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9. Simultaneously, the Soviet Union invaded Manchuria. These pressures led Japan to surrender unconditionally on August 15. The formal surrender document was signed on September 2, 1945. This officially ended World War II. Following the war, Japan lost its overseas possessions. The Allies occupied Japan until 1952 to oversee its recovery and change.
