Because of his firm and forceful style of governance, people called him the "Iron Chancellor." He rose from a background of Junker landowners to become one of the most influential leaders in European history. His work changed the map of Europe and created a new, unified nation-state.

Bismarck was born in 1815 at Schönhausen, a noble estate west of Berlin. His father, Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand von Bismarck, was a Junker and a former Prussian military officer. His mother, Wilhelmine Luise Mencken, came from a family of high-ranking government officials.

Bismarck grew up in a rural, bucolic setting. Although he was a well-educated man, he often wore military uniforms to maintain his image as a traditional Prussian Junker. He was highly cosmopolitan and spoke many languages, including English, French, Italian, Polish, and Russian.

His political career began in 1847 when he was chosen for the Prussian legislature. At this early stage, he was a staunch royalist. He believed that monarchs had a divine right to rule. During the revolutions of 1848, he supported King Frederick William IV.

Initially, Bismarck actually opposed the idea of a unified Germany. He feared that Prussia would lose its independence if it joined other German states. However, his views shifted while he served as Prussia's envoy to the Diet of the German Confederation in Frankfurt. He realized that Prussia had to lead the movement for unification to maintain its power against Austria.

To achieve unification, Bismarck utilized a strategy of decisive military conflict. He led Prussia through three short wars against Denmark, Austria, and France.

In 1870, he secured a victory against France with the support of the South German states. This success allowed him to oversee the creation of the unified German Empire in 1871.

While he was generally against maritime colonialism, he eventually acquired colonies to satisfy public and elite opinion. Domestically, he used complex political maneuvering to maintain control. He created the world's first welfare state. He did this partly to undermine his socialist opponents by providing social protections through the government.

Bismarck's domestic rule was often characterized by conflict with specific groups. In the 1870s, he engaged in a struggle against the Catholic Church known as the Kulturkampf. He aimed to reduce the influence of the Church in German life. This effort was unsuccessful, as Catholics formed the powerful German Centre Party.

He also fought against the Socialists. To maintain his authority, Bismarck ruled autocratically through a strong bureaucracy. This system concentrated power in the hands of the Junker elite and sidelined the Imperial Reichstag.

Bismarck's career ended in 1890 when he was dismissed by King Wilhelm II. He spent his retirement writing his memoirs.

His legacy remains a subject of intense debate among historians. Many praise him as a visionary diplomat who kept the peace in Europe for many years. Others criticize his authoritarian methods and his persecution of religious and political minorities. Regardless of the critique, his role in creating the German nation remains his most significant historical achievement.
