Today, we know there are about 23 to 25 different species. These species live in six different genera. These include names like Acanthostracion and Tetrosomus. The scrawled cowfish, Acanthostracion quadricornis, is one example. It can grow quite large in certain waters. Most boxfishes live in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans.

You can see how these fish are like little underwater tanks. Just as a tank protects what is inside, the carapace protects the fish. Even their colors and patterns are interesting. Many have bright colors or honeycomb patterns on their skin. Young fish are often more rounded than the square adults. They often have much brighter colors too.

The physical structure of a boxfish is quite remarkable. Instead of soft scales, they have hexagonal, plate-like scales. These scales are fused together into a single, solid structure. One specific example is a toxin called pahutoxin. Pahutoxin is a crystalline chemical found in the mucus of the skin. It is a choline chloride ester of 3-acetoxypalmitic acid.

When released, this mucus dissolves quickly in the surrounding seawater. This toxin acts similarly to steroidal saponins found in echinoderms. It can negatively affect other fish in the immediate area. Scientists note that pahutoxin behaves much like a detergent. This similarity means that detergent pollution in the ocean could potentially interfere with marine life receptors.

There are several different groups, or genera, within the Ostraciidae family. Scientists currently recognize about 25 extant species living in six different genera. One genus is Ostracion, which includes the yellow boxfish. Another is Acanthostracion, which includes the scrawled cowfish, Acanthostracion quadricornis.

The genus Lactophrys is known for its toxic defenses. Other genera include Lactoria, Paracanthostracion, and Tetrosomus. The genus Tetrosomus includes the camel cowfish, Tetrosomus gibbosus. Each genus contains species with different shapes and survival strategies.

Taxonomy, or the science of classifying living things, has changed for these fish. The French polymath Constantine Samuel Rafinesque first proposed the Ostraciidae family in 1810. In the past, scientists viewed Ostraciinae as a subfamily. They grouped it with the subfamily Aracaninae under a larger Ostraciidae heading. Recent phylogenetic studies, which look at evolutionary relationships, have changed this view. Scientists now agree that Aracanidae and Ostraciidae are separate, valid families. However, they belong to the same clade, known as the suborder Ostracioidei. The 5th edition of Fishes of the World places them in the suborder Ostracioidea.

Ostraciids have a wide geographic range across the globe. They are found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. Most live in middle latitudes. However, some species can be found in different areas. The common buffalo trunkfish, Lactophrys trigonus, lives mainly in Florida waters. Yet, it can be found as far north as Cape Cod.

The scrawled cowfish, Acanthostracion quadricornis, can grow to certain lengths, but it is often smaller in higher latitudes. Appearance also changes as they grow. While adults are square, young boxfish are more rounded. The young often show much brighter colors than the adults.

The study of Ostraciidae connects to many fields of science. Their unique armor provides insights into biological structural engineering. Their chemical defenses, like pahutoxin, are important to the study of toxicology. Understanding how these toxins behave in water helps marine biologists study ocean health. Even the fossil record provides clues about their history. For example, Eolactoria sorbinii lived during the Eocene period in Italy.
