Osman I was the man who started the Ottoman Empire. This empire began as a small group of lands called a beylik. It grew into a huge and powerful state that lasted for many centuries. The empire eventually ended in 1922, after World War I. Today, we use the word "Ottoman" to describe things from this time. This name comes directly from his name, Osman. He lived in a part of the world called Anatolia. His small territory was located in a region known as Bithynia.
Osman's life was shaped by the way he led his people. He grew up learning many skills used by nomadic Turkic groups. He practiced wrestling, horse riding, and using a bow and arrow. He also learned how to hunt with falcons.

History tells us that Osman's beginnings are hard to find. Most written records about his life were made much later. Some historians say his life is like a "black hole" because so little is known. Many stories about him are legends or myths. These stories were often written a hundred years after he died. Because of this, it is hard to tell what is a real fact. Some writers even suggest his name might have originally been Atman or Ataman. He may have chosen the name Osman later in his life.
Osman's family history is also a subject of much study. Traditional stories say his people were part of the Kayı tribe. These people moved from Central Asia to Anatolia to escape the Mongols.
Osman's actions changed the map of the world forever. He used different ways to expand his small land. He won battles, such as the Battle of Bapheus in 1301 or 1302.

Osman I was the founder of the Ottoman Empire. This empire began as a small Turkoman principality called a beylik. It eventually grew into a massive state that lasted until 1922. The term "Ottoman" is an English adjective derived from his name. His small territory was located in Bithynia, a region in northwestern Anatolia.
Historians face many challenges when studying Osman's life. Very little factual information about him has survived. Not a single written source from his actual reign exists today. The Ottomans did not record his history until the fifteenth century. This was more than one hundred years after his death. One historian even described this period as a "black hole." Because of this gap, it is difficult to separate fact from myth. Many stories about him are likely legends created later.
There is also debate regarding his original name. Some scholars argue his name was originally a Turkish name like Atman or Ataman.
Osman's lineage is also a subject of historical debate. Traditional Ottoman accounts say his ancestors belonged to the Kayı tribe. This clan of Oghuz Turks fled Central Asia due to Mongol invasions. They eventually settled in Anatolia under the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm. However, many scholars believe these family connections were later fabrications. They suggest these stories were made to provide dynastic legitimacy. Some sources even claim his lineage traced back to Noah. Others suggest he was a lowborn shepherd.
Osman's father, Ertuğrul, was a significant leader before him. Ertuğrul served as a Moqaddam, or lieutenant, for the Seljuk Sultan. He was granted the town of Söğüt on the Byzantine frontier.
Osman was raised with traditional nomadic Turkic skills. He mastered wrestling, swordsmanship, and horse riding. He also learned arrow shooting and falconry.
Osman grew his territory through several different methods. He focused his expansion on the vulnerable Byzantine Empire. One of his first major victories was the Battle of Bapheus in 1301 or 1302.
