Orpiment was even used as a correction fluid in ancient China.

Despite its beauty, orpiment presents serious challenges for conservation. The mineral is chemically unstable and degrades into arsenic oxides. These oxides are soluble in water, meaning they can dissolve and move.

In many paintings, these migrating oxides can be detected throughout the layers of paint. Light exposure also causes decay. It can turn the mineral into a white, crumbly substance called arsenic trioxide. Because of this, art conservators must prioritize humidity control. They must also minimize exposure to strong light to protect these works.

The use of orpiment as a primary paint pigment largely ended in the 19th century. This was due to its extreme toxicity and its incompatibility with other materials. It reacted poorly with copper-based pigments like verdigris or azurite. The introduction of cadmium yellows and chromium yellows provided safer, more stable alternatives. However, orpiment still has modern industrial roles. It is used to produce infrared-transmitting glass, semiconductors, and even fireworks. It also plays a part in the tanning industry to remove hair from hides. Because of its toxicity, modern safety standards remain very strict regarding its handling.
