The Orion Nebula is a bright cloud in space. 

Scientists study this nebula to learn how stars grow. They have seen disks of dust around young stars. These are called protoplanetary disks. They are the building blocks for new planets. The nebula also has a group of bright stars. We call this the Trapezium Cluster. 
The nebula has many colors. It can look red, blue, or green. The green color was once a mystery. People thought it came from a new element. Now we know it comes from oxygen. The nebula is very large. It is about 25 light-years across. It is also very heavy. It has 2,000 times the mass of our Sun. 
The Orion Nebula is a huge, glowing cloud of gas and dust in space. 


Stars form when clouds of gas and dust collapse inward. 

People have looked at this nebula for a very long time. The French astronomer Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc recorded it in 1610. Johann Baptist Cysat published the first observation in 1619. Later, Charles Messier included it in his famous catalog in 1774. Because it was his 42nd object, it is called M42. 

This nebula is much larger than it looks from Earth. It is about 25 light-years across. 

Modern tools help us see things that were once invisible. The Hubble Space Telescope has taken many detailed pictures of the nebula. These images help scientists build 3D models of the gas. 
The Orion Nebula, also known as Messier 42 or NGC 1976, is a massive, diffuse nebula located in the Milky Way galaxy.
