Many famous scientists changed how we see light. Johannes Kepler studied lenses and how the eye works in the 1600s. Isaac Newton showed that white light is a mix of colors. He used a prism to prove this in the late 1600s.

He described how light reflects and refracts, though his theories were still evolving. In 984, the Persian mathematician Ibn Sahl wrote about lenses. He correctly described a law of refraction. This law helped him calculate the best shapes for lenses and mirrors. 
Practical tools changed as theories grew more complex. In the 13th century, the first wearable eyeglasses were invented in Italy. 

Major breakthroughs eventually unified these different ideas. In the 1860s, James Clerk Maxwell unified wave optics with electromagnetic theory. 
Today, optics is connected to many different fields. It is essential to astronomy for studying space.
