Some people study what it means to be real.

Ontology is a part of philosophy. It is the study of being.
Some things are unique. We call these particulars. The Taj Mahal is a particular.
There are also two main types of objects. Concrete objects exist in space and time. A tree is a concrete object. You can touch it. Abstract objects are different. They are not in space or time. The number 7 is an abstract object.
People do not always agree on these ideas. Some thinkers believe only matter exists. This is called materialism. Other thinkers believe the mind and matter are separate. This is called dualism. Some people think there are no right answers. They think our words change how we see the world.
Ontology is a special branch of philosophy. It is the study of being.

Ontologists use many ways to study these big ideas. They look closely at concepts and experiences. They also use thought experiments and ideas from science.
One big idea is the difference between particulars and universals. Particulars are unique things that cannot be repeated.

Another way to group things is by how they exist. Concrete objects exist in space and time.

People have wondered about being for a very long time. These questions started in ancient times.

Ontology is the philosophical study of being. It is a branch of philosophy that investigates the nature of existence. It seeks to understand the features all entities have in common. It also examines how these entities are divided into basic categories. This field aims to discover the foundational building blocks of the world. It tries to characterize reality in its most general aspects.
Many thinkers view ontology as a subdiscipline of metaphysics. Metaphysics is the study of various aspects of fundamental reality. In this view, ontology focuses on the most general features of that reality. Some see it as general metaphysics, distinct from special metaphysics. Special metaphysics might focus on specific subjects like God, mind, or value.
Ontologists use several methods to investigate these deep questions. They perform analyses of concepts and human experience. They also use intuitions and thought experiments to test ideas. They may even integrate findings from the natural sciences.
A central distinction in ontology is between particulars and universals. Particulars, or individuals, are unique and non-repeatable entities.

Properties describe the specific characteristics or qualities of an entity. Philosophers divide these into essential and accidental properties. An essential property is something an entity must have to exist. For example, having three sides is essential for a triangle. An accidental property is something an entity can lose without changing its nature. Being red is an accidental property of a triangle. Relations describe how two or more entities stand to one another. Being "east of" is a spatial relation between two locations. Substances are also important as they support properties and relations. Substances are often seen as the fundamental building blocks of reality. They can exist on their own and persist through change.
Ontologists also distinguish between concrete and abstract objects. Concrete objects exist within space and time.

The origins of ontology reach back to ancient times. Speculations about the nature of being began in ancient India, China, and Greece.
