The river's ecosystem is changing due to human activity. Dams and changing water levels affect the region. Lake Turkana receives about ninety percent of its water from the Omo. As the lake level drops, the salinity level rises. This can change the environment for fish and animals. The construction of large dams also causes controversy. Some groups worry about the impact on vulnerable people. Others argue that the power is necessary for the country. The Omo River remains a central part of Ethiopia's geography and history.
