The geology of the park is quite complex and fascinating. The Olympic Mountains formed through an accretionary wedge process. This happened due to the subduction zone of the Juan De Fuca Plate. This tectonic process uplifted the mountains from the ocean floor. The mountains are made of a mixture of basaltic and oceanic sedimentary rock. The park is also famous for its unique turbidites. Turbidites are sediments that travel into the ocean as suspended particles. These particles create a sedimentary layering effect on the ocean floor. Over time, these sediments compact into rock in a constant cycle. 
Visitors might also notice strange rocks called tectonic mélanges. These are large rocks that are big enough to appear on maps. Some of these mélanges are as large as a house. Locals call them "smell rocks" because they have a strong petroleum odor. The coastline is also shaped by natural forces like the Hoh River. The river discharges large amounts of naturally eroded timber and drift. This material moves north and enriches the beaches. This driftwood creates a commanding visual and biological presence on the shore. 
The mountains contain massive, ancient glaciers that sit on high ridgelines. However, these glaciers are changing due to climate change. The number of glaciers fell from 266 in 1982 to 184 by 2009. Mount Olympus is the most prominent peak in the western range. It is the greatest non-volcanic peak in the contiguous United States outside the North Cascades. It holds several glaciers, including the Hoh Glacier. The Hoh Glacier is 3.06 miles long. In the east, the mountains are much drier. This is because of the rain shadow created by the western mountains. 
The western side of the park is home to temperate rainforests. These include the Hoh and Quinault Rainforests. They receive over 140 inches of annual precipitation. This makes it perhaps the wettest area in the continental United States. Unlike tropical rainforests, these are dominated by coniferous trees. You will see Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock, Coast Douglas-fir, and Western redcedar. 
Because the park is on an isolated peninsula, it has many endemic species. Endemic species are plants or animals found only in one specific place. Examples include the Olympic Marmot, Piper's bellflower, and Flett's violet. The park also provides habitat for Roosevelt elk. These elk are native only to the Pacific Northwest coast. The park is home to sizable black bear and black-tailed deer populations.
Human history in the area is very long. Before European settlers arrived, Native Americans used the peninsula for fishing and hunting. They used the subalpine meadows extensively for tribal activities. Later, settlers arrived and began the timber industry in the late 19th century. This led to public dissent against logging in the 1920s. To protect the land, President Theodore Roosevelt created a monument in 1909. This was meant to protect the Roosevelt elk.
