He is a major figure in post-colonial African history. Obasanjo served as Nigeria's Military Head of State from 1976 to 1979. Later, he served as the civilian president from 1999 to 2007. He is a Nigerian nationalist and was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. His life spans many different roles, from a soldier to a high-ranking politician.

Obasanjo's early life was marked by significant economic challenges. He was born on March 5, 1937, in the village of Ibogun-Olaogun. His father, Obasanjo Bankole, was a farmer and a palm wine tapper. After his father left the family, Obasanjo's mother worked as a trader to survive. To afford his education, Obasanjo performed many manual jobs. He worked on cocoa and kola farms and collected firewood. He even sold sand to builders to pay his school fees.

In 1958, Obasanjo joined the Nigerian Army to pursue a career in engineering. Engineering is the branch of science involving the design and building of structures. He received training in Ghana and at the Mons Officer Cadet School in England. During his time in England, he earned a certificate in engineering. He also developed strong views against the British Empire. In 1960, he was part of a United Nations peacekeeping force in the Congo.

While in the Congo, he helped protect civilians during a period of political unrest.

Obasanjo played a critical role during the Nigerian Civil War. This conflict involved the Nigerian government and Biafran separatists. In 1967, he was appointed commander of the Western State. He later became the rear commander for Murtala Muhammed. By 1970, he accepted the surrender of the Biafran forces. In 1975, a military coup placed him in a ruling group called a triumvirate. After the leader, Murtala Muhammed, was assassinated in 1976, Obasanjo became the Head of State.

As Head of State, Obasanjo focused on several specific policy changes. He oversaw budgetary cut-backs to manage the nation's finances. He also expanded access to free school education for many citizens. His administration aligned Nigeria more closely with the United States. He also supported groups fighting against white minority rule in southern Africa. Most importantly, he worked to restore democracy to the country. In 1979, he transferred power to the elected civilian president, Shehu Shagari.

Obasanjo's political career faced a major setback in the 1990s. In 1993, Sani Abacha seized power through a military coup. Obasanjo was critical of the Abacha administration. In 1995, he was arrested and convicted of being part of a planned coup. He maintained his innocence throughout the legal process. While in prison, he became a born-again Christian. He was released in 1998 following the death of Abacha.

After his release, he ran for president and won the 1999 election.

During his presidency from 1999 to 2007, Obasanjo implemented several major reforms. He worked to de-politicize the military and expanded the police force. He also mobilized the army to fight various forms of internal violence. To manage rising national debt, he privatized several public enterprises. He was also a strong supporter of Pan-Africanism. This is the idea that African nations should cooperate closely. He helped form the African Union and served as its chair from 2004 to 2006.

Obasanjo's legacy remains a subject of debate among historians and citizens. Supporters praise his role in Nigeria's transition to democracy. They also admire his efforts to encourage cooperation across the African continent. However, critics have raised several concerns regarding his leadership. Some accuse his administrations of corruption and human rights abuses. Others argue that he tried too hard to maintain his personal power. Despite these criticisms, he remains a central figure in modern African politics.
