Offa was a very powerful king of Mercia.
Offa worked hard to grow his power. At first, he took control of local groups like the Hwicce. He also took control of the Magonsæte people. By 771, he had power over the land of Sussex. In the 780s, he ruled most of southern England. He made an alliance with Beorhtric of Wessex. To seal this deal, Offa's daughter Eadburh married Beorhtric.
Offa was a Christian king, but he sometimes fought with the Church. He had a big disagreement with Jænberht, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Offa wanted more control over religious areas. He asked Pope Adrian I to split the Canterbury area in two. This created a new area called the archdiocese of Lichfield. This change helped Offa's son, Ecgfrith, become king in 787.
We know about Offa because of things he left behind. He made many beautiful silver coins.

Offa was a very big leader for his time. Some people call him the most imposing king before Alfred the Great. He even built a huge wall called Offa's Dyke. He did not rule the north, but he tried to connect with them. He gave his daughter Ælfflæd to the Northumbrian king Æthelred I. Historians study his life to understand how England changed. His son Ecgfrith became king after Offa died in 796.
Offa was a dominant king of Mercia in Anglo-Saxon England.
Offa rose to power following a period of intense civil war. This conflict began after the assassination of King Æthelbald in 757. Beornred initially took the throne after Æthelbald was killed. However, Offa defeated Beornred to claim the Mercian throne for himself. Offa was the son of Thingfrith and a descendant of Eowa.
To maintain his rule, Offa had to consolidate several territories. He gained control over Midland peoples like the Hwicce and the Magonsæte. He also exerted influence over the kingdom of Lindsey. By 771, Offa had established authority over Sussex. In the 780s, he expanded Mercian Supremacy across most of southern England.
Offa's relationship with the Church was often complicated. Although he was a Christian king, he frequently clashed with religious leaders. He had a major dispute with Jænberht, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Offa successfully persuaded Pope Adrian I to divide the archdiocese of Canterbury. This action created a new archdiocese at Lichfield.
Offa left behind significant physical evidence of his wealth and organization. He commissioned many elegant silver coins during his reign.

His ability to organize vast resources is seen in Offa's Dyke. This massive earthwork serves as a testament to his command over labor and land. While he dominated the south, his power did not reach Northumbria. He attempted to build connections there through marriage. He gave his daughter Ælfflæd to the Northumbrian king Æthelred I in 792. This shows his use of diplomacy alongside military force.
Historians debate the true nature of Offa's political goals. Some once believed he worked toward a unified England. However, modern historians like Simon Keynes suggest a different view. Keynes argues that Offa was driven by a lust for power rather than a vision for unity. He suggests Offa left a reputation behind rather than a lasting political legacy. After Offa died in 796, his son Ecgfrith ruled for less than five months before Coenwulf took the throne.
