Georgy Ushakov and Nikolay Urvantsev charted the islands between 1930 and 1932. People have used the island for science too. The Vavilov Meteorological Station worked there from 1974 to 1988. In 1989, a nuclear-powered lighthouse was installed on the island.

Recent observations show how the island's ice is changing. In 2015, the Vavilov Glacier experienced a dramatic acceleration due to warming. This change happened very quickly over a short period. Between 2015 and 2016, the front of the glacier advanced by 4 kilometers. During this same time, the glacier lost 4.5 cubic kilometers of ice. There are also smaller ice formations on the island. One example is the Malyutka Glacier. These changes in ice mass are important for scientists to track.
