In the parts of the island that are not covered by ice, the land is very different. The ground is a dry tundra or a desert. Several rivers flow through these areas. The Podemnaya and Bolshaya rivers flow to the northwest. The Bedovaya and Obryvistaya rivers flow to the north. These rivers sit between the different glaciers. The coast of the island is not smooth. It is the largest island within the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago. This island is quite significant in size. It is estimated to be the 59th largest island in the world. The island is positioned between two different bodies of water. To the north lies the Red Army Strait. This strait separates the island from Komsomolets Island and Pioneer Island. To the south, the broader Shokalsky Strait separates it from Bolshevik Island. These straits serve as important passages. They connect the Kara Sea in the west to the Laptev Sea in the east.

The geography of the island is defined by extreme cold and ice. Half of the entire island is covered by glaciers. These massive sheets of ice flow all the way down into the sea. There are five major domed ice caps on the island. Moving clockwise from the north, they are named Albanov, Vavilov, University, Karpinsky, and Rusanov. The Rusanov and Karpinsky ice caps are located on the eastern side. These two ice caps feed glaciers into the Matusevich Fjord and the Marat Fjord. The Karpinsky ice cap is particularly important. It reaches a maximum height of 963 meters at Mount Karpinsky. This mountain is the highest point in the entire Severnaya Zemlya group.

In areas where the ice does not reach, the environment is very harsh. The vegetation in these sections is classified as either tundra or desert. Several rivers flow through these ice-free zones. The Podemnaya and Bolshaya rivers drain toward the northwest. They flow between the Vavilov and Albanov glaciers. In the north, the Bedovaya and Obryvistaya rivers flow between the Albanov and Rusanov ice caps. The coastline is not smooth or even. Instead, it is rugged with many headlands and coves. Even though it was found, people did not know it was an island right away. Its status as an island was not proven until 1931. Georgy Ushakov and Nikolay Urvantsev proved this during an expedition from 1930 to 1932. They were responsible for charting the archipelago. Later, humans used the island for scientific research.
