In 1927, a man named Charles Stine suggested a new way to organize research teams. He wanted them to find ways to turn chemistry into practical things. A Harvard instructor named Wallace Hume Carothers was hired to lead the polymer group. He spent years studying the theories of a German chemist named Hermann Staudinger. Carothers was very successful and helped improve how we understand all polymers. He died just sixteen months before the world heard about his great invention.

On February 28, 1935, Carothers and his team created the first nylon 6,6.

They worked at the DuPont Experimental Station. Later, a scientist named Paul Schlack developed a different kind called nylon 6 in 1938. DuPont got a patent for the material in September 1938. The first factory to make nylon opened in Seaford, Delaware, on December 15, 1939. This plant was so important that it became a National Historic Chemical Landmark in 1995. These dates show how long it took to turn a lab idea into a real product.

You can see nylon in many things in your own home. It was first used in toothbrushes in 1938. Then, it became famous for women's stockings.

Some varieties even have a silk-like appearance. Because nylons are thermoplastics, they can be melted and processed into many forms. This allows them to be turned into fibers, thin films, or various solid shapes.

Scientists categorize nylons into different families based on how they are built. One group is designated as nylon-XY. These are created by combining diamines and dicarboxylic acids. The X and Y represent the specific lengths of the carbon chains used in the reaction. A famous example of this type is nylon-6,6.

On February 28, 1935, Carothers synthesized the first nylon-6,6 at the DuPont Experimental Station. This specific polymer possessed the exact elasticity and strength the team sought. While Carothers worked on nylon-6,6, Paul Schlack at IG Farben later developed nylon 6 in 1938. DuPont obtained a patent for the material in September 1938. The first commercial production plant opened in Seaford, Delaware, on December 15, 1939. This facility was so significant that the American Chemical Society named it a National Historic Chemical Landmark in 1995. Sadly, Carothers died 16 months before the public announcement of his success.

Nylon's journey to the public was a massive commercial success. The name "Nylon" was actually a marketing modification of the word "norun," meaning "no run."

It was first used in toothbrush bristles in 1938. However, it became most famous as women's stockings. At the 1939 New York World's Fair, nylon was presented as a miracle material. World War II changed how nylon was used by the global community. Almost all nylon production was diverted from consumers to the military. The material was used to make essential items like parachutes and tents. This wartime demand helped grow the industry and the importance of chemical engineering. When the war ended, the desire for consumer goods was so high that it caused "nylon riots." In Pittsburgh, an estimated 40,000 people lined up just to buy 13,000 pairs of stockings. Between 1945 and 1952, stockings and lingerie accounted for 80% of the world's nylon use.

Today, nylon remains a vital part of many different systems. It is used in textiles for apparel and flooring. It also provides strength in rubber reinforcement. In the automotive and electrical industries, it is used for molded components. Nylon films are also common in food packaging to keep items fresh. The ability to produce these materials at scale helped create thousands of jobs. For example, the original DuPont plant provided 1,800 jobs. This success demonstrated how chemical engineering can transform the economy and daily life.
