Many different groups of people have lived here for a long time. Berbers lived in the northwest. Ancient Egyptians lived in the east. Later, Arabs came to the region. This changed the culture and the way people speak. Today, most people in North Africa are Arabs. The region also shares many links with the Middle East. It is a very important part of the world.
North Africa is a large region at the top of the African continent.
The land here has three very different looks. In the west, the Atlas Mountains rise high above the ground.

People have lived in this region for a very long time. Some of the earliest humans lived here even millions of years ago.
History in North Africa has seen many strong groups come and go. The Carthaginians were a powerful group with a strong navy. Later, the Roman Empire took control of much of the land. North Africa was a very important place for growing grain for Rome. After the Romans, different groups like the Vandals and the Byzantines ruled. Eventually, Muslim rule began to spread across the region. This brought new ways of life and new buildings, like the Great Mosque of Kairouan.
North Africa is connected to many other places in interesting ways. It shares a lot of culture and language with the Middle East. This link is so strong that people often group them together. The region also has ties to the islands near Europe. Places like the Canary Islands or Madeira are quite close to the African coast.
North Africa is a vast region located at the northern edge of the African continent.
The history of the region is tied to the very origins of humanity. Researchers study North Africa to understand early human history and migration. Some scientists believe North Africa was the exit point for the Out of Africa migration. This is when modern humans first traveled out of the continent. Evidence of early hominid occupation has been found in Setif, dating back as far as 2.6 million years.
Environmental changes shaped how people lived in ancient times. Around 3500 BCE, a tilt in the Earth's orbit caused rapid desertification in the Sahara. This drying process changed the ecology of the entire region. Before this, the Neolithic Subpluvial period allowed for vibrant life and farming. Cave paintings at Tassili n'Ajjer show scenes of everyday life from this era. As the land dried, people introduced domesticated plants and animals. This shift provided the backdrop for the rise of great civilizations. The Nile Valley became a center for monumental architecture, such as the Pyramids of Giza.
Ancient North Africa was home to powerful empires and diverse cultures. In the west, the Phoenicians established colonies like Carthage. The Carthaginians built a massive commercial empire with a very strong navy. They controlled territories in the Iberian Peninsula and islands like Malta and Sardinia. Eventually, the Romans conquered Carthaginian lands in 146 BCE, making them the province of Africa. The region remained a vital part of the Roman Empire for centuries. It served as a major grain province that supported Roman prosperity. Even after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, trade routes remained active.
Cultural shifts occurred through migrations and conquests over many centuries. In the northwest, Berber populations have lived since the beginning of recorded history. In the east, the Ancient Egyptians and Nubians built famous civilizations. During the seventh and eighth centuries, Arabs from the Arabian Peninsula arrived. This led to the early Muslim conquests of the region. The resulting process of Islamization and Arabization changed the culture forever. Many Berbers and Copts merged into this new Arab-Islamic culture. Today, Arabs make up the majority of the population in most North African countries.
The geography of the region is defined by three major features. The Atlas Mountains stretch across northern Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.

Modern North Africa has experienced significant political changes. After the 19th century, European powers like France, Italy, and the UK occupied much of the area. The region was also a major setting for the North African Campaign during World War II. In the 1950s and 1960s, most North African states gained their independence. More recently, the Arab Spring movement began with revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt. These uprisings led to government changes and, in the case of Libya, civil war. Despite these challenges, the region remains a central part of the global Muslim world.
