Foster's professional career is defined by several distinct stages and innovative projects. In 1963, he helped form a firm called Team 4 with several partners. One of their early works was the Cockpit, a minimalist glass bubble in Cornwall. In 1967, he founded Foster Associates, which later became Foster + Partners. During the late 1960s and 1970s, he collaborated with Richard Buckminster Fuller. This partnership helped develop an environmentally sensitive approach to design. One notable project from this era was the Samuel Beckett Theatre at St Peter's College, Oxford. He also designed the Willis Faber & Dumas headquarters in Ipswich, which featured a modular, open-plan layout. 
Many of Foster's buildings are recognized as landmarks of high-tech design. The Stansted Airport terminal in London is a prime example of this style. 
Foster's work often integrates complex computer systems with physical laws like convection. This allows his buildings to function more efficiently. He also explored the intersection of technology and traditional art. While planning the Stansted terminal, he worked with artist Brian Clarke on stained glass proposals. This was the first time computer-assisted design was used in the creation of stained glass. More recently, he worked with Steve Jobs to design the Apple Park campus in California.
