Nizami Ganjavi was a legendary 12th-century poet of the Persian language. He is widely recognized as the greatest romantic epic poet in Persian literature. An epic is a long narrative poem that tells of grand adventures and heroes. Nizami changed this tradition by introducing a colloquial and realistic style to his writing. His work brought a sense of freshness and vigor to the Persian epic tradition. Today, his literary heritage is deeply valued across Afghanistan, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Iran, Tajikistan, and the Kurdistan region.

Nizami was much more than a simple writer of verses. He was often honored with the title Hakim, which means "the Sage." While he was not a philosopher in the specific sense of thinkers like Avicenna, he was a master of many complex fields. He synthesized various branches of Islamic thought into his work. His prodigious learning allowed him to include details about mathematics, astronomy, and astrology. He also possessed knowledge of alchemy, medicine, botany, and Islamic law. He even integrated elements from Christian, Pahlavi, and Jewish histories into his narratives. This eclecticism allowed him to create a whole, unified world within his poetry.

Very little is recorded about Nizami's early years because he was not a court poet.

Because he did not serve a specific dynasty, he does not appear in official royal annals. Most of what historians know comes from his own poems, which often lack reliable biographical details. We can estimate he was born between 535 and 540 AH, which is roughly 1140 to 1146 CE. His formal name was Jamal ad-Din Abu Muhammad Ilyas ibn-Yusuf ibn-Zaki ibn-Mu'ayyad. There is scholarly debate regarding his family tree. Some believe Mu'ayyad was a title for his grandfather, Zakki, while others suggest it was a separate name or a great-grandfather.

Nizami's origins are tied to the city of Ganja in the South Caucasus. At the time of his life, Ganja was part of the Seljuk Empire and had a large Iranian population. Some historians, like the Armenian writer Kirakos Gandzaketsi, noted that the city was densely populated by Iranians and a small number of Christians. While some verses suggest he might be from the hinterland of Qom, many scholars consider this a spurious interpolation. His mother, Ra'isa, was of Kurdish origin. This connection to Kurdish heritage is noted in his own autobiographical writings. His father, Yusuf, and his mother both passed away while he was still young. His maternal uncle, Khwaja Umar, took responsibility for his upbringing and provided him with an excellent education.

Nizami's personal life was marked by significant emotional depth and recurring loss.

He was married three times, and each marriage ended in tragedy. His first wife was a Kipchak woman sent to him by the ruler of Darband. She was the mother of his only son, Mohammad, whom he called the "apple of my eyes."

Tragically, Nizami observed a pattern where his wives died near the completion of his major works. He famously lamented this connection, asking why he had to sacrifice a wife for every mathnavi, or long poem. This cycle of creation and loss added a layer of profound sorrow to his romantic narratives.

His literary output is characterized by its ability to blend the human with the divine.

In works like the Iskandar Nama, he explored the destiny of heroes through both wisdom and religious devotion. He moved beyond the older styles of poets like Firdawsi by focusing on the prophetic and ecumenical aspects of his characters. His stories, such as the tale of Khosrow and Shirin, used vivid imagery and realistic human emotions. This approach helped define a new form of Persian national identity through literature. His ability to weave complex religious and historical threads made his epics stand out in the history of Arabic and Persian literature.

Today, the impact of Nizami Ganjavi remains visible in both culture and physical monuments.

In the Republic of Azerbaijan, he is celebrated as a national hero. His image is even featured on the Azerbaijani manat currency. Large monuments and museums, such as the Nizami Museum of Azerbaijani Literature in Baku, preserve his memory. His works continue to be studied for their mastery of language and their deep philosophical synthesis. He remains a bridge between the ancient traditions of the past and the evolving cultures of the Caucasus and Iran.
