Nikolay helped start many schools for flight. He also helped start a big institute for air and water study. This group is called TsAGI. In 1920, he found a way to measure power from a turbine. A turbine is a tool that can make power. Many things are named after him today. There is a city near Moscow named for him. There is even a crater on the Moon named Zhukovskiy. He died in Moscow in 1921.

Zhukovsky used math to explain how planes stay in the sky. He used something called the circulation hypothesis to explain lift. Lift is the force that pushes a wing upward. He showed that this force depends on how fast an object moves. He also created a special shape for wings called the Joukowsky airfoil. This shape has a rounded front and a sharp back edge. 
This great scientist had a very busy life of learning. He was born in a village called Orekhovo. He graduated from Moscow University in 1868. He studied under a teacher named August Davidov. Later, he became a professor at the Imperial Technical School in 1872. He was also interested in the work of Ernst Mach. He even studied the ideas of Ludwig Mach. These thinkers helped shape his view of how air moves.
Zhukovsky did a lot of work for the Soviet government too. In 1904, he started the first Aerodynamic Institute near Moscow. This was in a place called Kachino. In 1918, he helped start a group called TsAGI. This is the Central AeroHydroDynamics Institute. He was the very first head of that institute. In 1920, he also wrote about how much energy a turbine can make. He died in Moscow in 1921.

Zhukovsky made several major mathematical breakthroughs regarding how objects move through fluids. He was the first scientist to explain the origin of aerodynamic lift using mathematics. He developed what is known as the circulation hypothesis. This hypothesis established that the lift force produced by a body moving through an ideal fluid is proportional to the velocity and the circulation around that body. Lift is the upward force that allows an aircraft to stay in the air. He also created the Joukowsky airfoil. This is an ideal mathematical shape for an aerodynamic profile. A Joukowsky airfoil features a rounded nose, known as the leading edge, and a double surface with finite thickness. It can be symmetrical or cambered, and it always ends in a sharp trailing edge.
Beyond his theoretical work, Zhukovsky was a builder and an educator. He built the first wind tunnel in Russia. A wind tunnel is a device used to study how air flows around a specific shape. He also contributed to civil engineering through the water hammer equation. This equation helps engineers understand pressure changes in pipes. In 1920, he published a derivation for the maximum energy that can be obtained from a turbine. This discovery happened at the same time as work by German scientist Albert Betz. Because British scientist Frederick W. Lanchester also derived this result, it is sometimes called Betz's law. This is an example of Stigler's law of eponymy, where names are often given to discoveries after the fact.
Zhukovsky's academic journey began in the village of Orekhovo in the Russian Empire. He graduated from Moscow University in 1868 after studying under August Davidov. These courses eventually turned into the Moscow Aviation Technical College. In 1920, the Institute of Engineers of the Red Air Fleet was established on this foundation. By May 1922, this institution became the Air Force Engineering Academy, which was named in honor of Zhukovsky.

His influence extends to many modern scientific institutions and cultural works. The Russian Central Aero-Hydrodynamic Institute and the Ukrainian National Aerospace University – Kharkiv Aviation Institute both bear his name. Even the film industry recognized his life when Mosfilm produced a biopic about him in 1950. This film was directed by Vsevolod Pudovkin and featured music by Vissarion Shebalin. Today, the Zhukovsky House serves as a museum dedicated to his memory. His mathematical foundations continue to support the way we understand flight and fluid movement.
