In 1985, he stated that the Soviet Union could match the Strategic Defense Initiative proposed by the U.S. He received many high honors for his service to science. These included the Lenin Prize in 1959 and the Nobel Prize in 1964. He was named a Hero of Socialist Labour twice, in 1969 and 1982. He also earned the Lomonosov Grand Gold Medal in 1990. Basov passed away in Moscow on July 1, 2001. He is buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
