Vavilov discovered something called centers of origin. These are specific places on Earth where certain plants first began to grow. To find them, he went on many long trips. He traveled to places like Iran, China, and Ethiopia. He even visited Mexico and South America. In 1916, he went to Iran to collect legume seeds. These are plants like beans, lentils, and peas. He found many new samples there. He used these seeds to learn how plants change over time.
To keep these plants safe, Vavilov created the first seed bank. 
However, Vavilov faced a very hard time in his life. A man named Trofim Lysenko disagreed with Vavilov's science. Lysenko believed in different ideas about how plants grow. Lysenko also had the support of the leader Joseph Stalin. 

Even though his life ended sadly, his work changed the world. Many years later, the government said he was a hero. 
Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov was a pioneering Russian and Soviet scientist. He worked as an agronomist, botanist, and geneticist. His primary mission was to understand the origins of cultivated plants. By finding where crops first began, he hoped to improve them. This work was essential for feeding a growing global population. Vavilov aimed to prevent the kind of famine his father had experienced. 
Vavilov developed a famous theory regarding the centers of origin. He believed that specific geographic regions served as the birthplaces for various crops. To prove this, he led numerous botanical-agronomic expeditions across the globe. In 1916, he traveled to Iran to collect legume seeds. He found 171 new samples, including chickpeas, lentils, and peas. This suggested Southwest Asia was a major center for these plants. 
His expeditions covered almost every continent. In 1921, he visited Canada and the United States. He concluded that North America was not a center of plant diversity. Instead, he found these centers in Mexico and Central America. In 1926, he explored the Mediterranean, visiting places like Greece and North Africa. He studied legumes like the chickpea, which adds protein to diets. He also visited Sudan and Ethiopia to identify another center of diversity.
To protect this precious biological information, Vavilov created the world's first seed bank. He established this at the Institute of Plant Industry in Leningrad. A seed bank acts as a massive library for plant genetics, known as germplasm. By 1933, his collection grew to over 148,000 specimens. This was the largest collection of its kind in the world. He knew that human actions could cause useful plant varieties to disappear. 
Vavilov’s scientific career was interrupted by intense political conflict. A scientist named Trofim Lysenko began to oppose Vavilov’s work. Lysenko rejected the science of genetics, which was based on Gregor Mendel’s findings. Instead, Lysenko proposed his own ideas about plant biology. Lysenko gained the favor of the Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin. 
The political pressure led to a tragic end for the scientist. In August 1940, Vavilov was arrested by the secret police. He was accused of spying and damaging Soviet agriculture. In 1941, he was sentenced to death. His sentence was later changed to twenty years of imprisonment. Sadly, Vavilov died in a prison in Saratov in 1943. Medical records from that time noted conditions like pneumonia and dystrophy. 
Despite his death, Vavilov's scientific legacy remains incredibly powerful. In 1955, his death sentence was retroactively pardoned by Nikita Khrushchev. By the late 1950s, he was celebrated as a hero of Soviet science. His work on wheat and maize continues to support the global food supply. The institute he helped build still holds massive collections of seeds. For example, it holds 43,000 legume samples from 160 different species. 
Vavilov’s contributions connect botany to global food security. He understood how the diversity of seeds allows for better plant breeding. His collection provided the germplasm for most legume varieties in the Soviet Union. He also observed a phenomenon called Vavilovian mimicry. This occurs when weeds evolve to look more like the crops they inhabit. His life demonstrates how scientific discovery can change the way humanity survives.
